The No Woman, No Girl Mission and Founding Story, with Shirnetta Harrell

The No Woman, No Girl Mission and Founding Story, with Shirnetta Harrell

"90% of my work is educational. It's teaching people who may not have ever experienced poverty or adversity about the privilege and honor of what it is to be able to go to Target and spend a hundred dollars on deodorant and pads."
As a social worker, Shirnetta Harrell saw too many situations where a girl would need to get a toothbrush for the night, or hadn't washed her hair in months, or was using tissues for her period because she couldn't afford tampons. It was then that she made it her mission that no woman and no girl will go without access to everyday essentials to survive crisis or transition.
Today she shares her why behind founding No Woman No Girl, her drive to serve others, and what all of us can do to help.
    In this episode, you'll learn:

Shirnetta's why behind founding No Woman No Girl

    Her drive to serve others
The difference that she and NWNG have made so far
What we can all do to help

From 1858 Mansion to 9-Room Boutique Hotel: LIVE from Heights House with Sarah Shepherd

From 1858 Mansion to 9-Room Boutique Hotel: LIVE from Heights House with Sarah Shepherd

"I can pinpoint moments in this process through renovating or how we spent our money or where I felt like I should have done one thing, but an expert in the industry told me I should do it this way. But this is my vision not theirs."
One of my favorite things in having a podcast is going to different locations and recording live in front of a Women’s Social Club audience. And today, we’re live from Heights House, where we got a drink at the parlour, the staff brought us some light bites, and we got to hang out with owner Sarah Shepherd in the basement lounge.
    In this episode, you'll learn:

Why in the world someone would want to restore a mansion built in 1858
Setbacks Sarah faced in renovating, and how she overcame
What Heights House Hotel has meant for the community
    What's next for Sarah

"We Had Nothing. It Was Just Mud." The Maxwell's Chelsea Hand on Building a Venue During the Pandemic

"We Had Nothing. It Was Just Mud." The Maxwell's Chelsea Hand on Building a Venue During the Pandemic

"We had nothing there. It was just mud. I would pull up, take the desk out of my trunk. I had this cute little lookbook that had, you know, all the finishes and stuff we've picked out. We had some renderings. I have hard hats with our logo on them. And so we'd walk around, and I would kind of, like, stand and be like, so this is where a wall is going to be. And then I'd shimmy over and go, and then this is is where the door is. And literally, there was nothing there when we sent out our first contract. "
10 years ago, Chelsea Hand sketched her vision for an event space on a napkin. In 2020, she decided to turn her napkin-sketch dream into reality - and as she's breaking ground on what would become The Maxwell...well we all know what happened in 2020.
    In this episode, you'll learn:

Chelsea's first choice for a venue was in Durham, and why that didn't work out
What happened when the pandemic hit
How Chelsea sold the venue space to couples when it was literally mud
What happened when they opened in 2021
What's ahead for Chelsea and The Maxwell

Embracing Body Positivity, with Boudoir Photographer Katelyn Guild

Embracing Body Positivity, with Boudoir Photographer Katelyn Guild

"I would leave sessions and weddings and events and headshot sessions, and every single person, both men and women that I photographed all had the same narrative. You're gonna Photoshop me, you're gonna change my body, you're gonna make me look younger, thinner, fatter, more curvy. Every single person was dealing with some sort of dysmorphia or some sort of body image issue that they wanted changed. And I was like, why are we walking around hoping to be more like somebody else?"
Katelyn Guild grew up with a camera in her hands and always loved photography - just as a hobby. But when her father passed away unexpectedly, she realized life is short, and it was time to take her passion full time.  Through her journey, she realized something else - that she wants to help every woman feel comfortable in their own bodies.
    In this episode, you'll learn:

    Why Katelyn chose boudoir photography
How her business has grown on Instagram and TikTok
    How to take "spicy" selfies
How to talk to kids about body positivity

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, with Kiara Ruth

"I tell people with imposter syndrome, the truth is, it never goes away. But you learn how to deal with it almost like trauma. You learn how to deal with it and like meet the trauma or the imposter syndrome at the door."
Kiara Ruth is an Arkansas-born criminal justice major turned DEA agent hopeful, who experienced a whirlwind romance and moved to Raleigh, NC. She quickly found herself a wife and mother - but felt like she had lost her own identity.
