How to build a cult-like following for your business with Forecite Helmet's Alfred Boyadgis | #601

How to build a cult-like following for your business with Forecite Helmet's Alfred Boyadgis | #601

In 2013, industrial designer Alfred Boyages had (in his own words) a seriously lucky motorcycle accident. Whilst recovering from a banged-up knee, he conceptualised the idea of a smart helmet; one that could help riders foresee what’s up ahead. Now all he needed was an army or riders to help him perfect it. Forecite Helmets was born and to this day, has a cult-like following. It’s a super smart episode 601 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Forcite Helmets' Alfred Boyadgis

Like so many brands, industrial designer Alfred Boyadgis' business was born out of an unfortunate first-hand experience. In 2013, he took a slide on his Yamaha while riding through an oil slick, seriously injuring his knee.

With a keen interest in wearable technologies, and given the availability of sophisticated tracking technology, Alfred was convinced that there must be a way to combine these to allow motorcycle riders to foresee upcoming hazards, enabling them to take evasive action before they became a danger.

So, far from being the end of a journey, Alfred’s “lucky accident” sparked a new one. He teamed up with fellow graduate, Julian Chow, and sharing a mutual passion for motorcycle culture as well as innovative design, the pair brought to life the first iteration of what would become the Forcite MK1 smart motorcycle helmet. And a very sexy beast it is!

All they needed now was an army of riders to help them perfect it. And they got that in spades, with the Forcite Helmet brand now having a cult-like following.

We start off with Alfred taking us inside the mind of a motorcycle rider …

Bill Edgar AKA The Coffin Confessor gives the dead their final say | #600

Imagine you’re dying with a secret. Something you’ve never had the courage to tell your friends or family.  Or a last wish – a task you need carried out before you can rest in peace.  Now imagine there’s someone who can take care of all that, who has little respect for the living, but will do anything for the dead. It’s a kooky and spooky episode 600 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.A little more about Bill Edgar, AKA The Coffin Confessor

A private investigator by trade, Gold Coast based Bill Edgar calls himself The Coffin Confessor, and gets paid handsomely to gatecrash funerals, will readings and wakes. Put simply, he’s a one-of-a-kind professional businessman on a mission to make good on the last requests of his soon-to-be-deceased clients.

Bill’s been many things in his life including the son of one of Australia's most notorious gangsters, a homeless street kid, a maximum security prisoner, a family man, activist, philosopher and much, much more.

In this no-holes-barred chat, you’ll hear how he became The Coffin Confessor, how he gets clients, the weirdest, funniest and most rewarding jobs he’s done, what he charges, how he gets the crowd on his side, along with how he became a best-selling author and the subject of a soon-to-be Hollywood blockbuster.

How (& why) to take your business global with international lawyer Cynthia Dearin | #599

If you think the idea of that beautiful business of yours expanding overseas is a pipe dream, then think again. International business strategist and lawyer, Cynthia Dearin, may just change your mind. It’s a far-reaching episode 599 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Business Without Borders author Cynthia Dearin

One of the things I’m passionate about is helping you identify additional revenue streams for your business.

That’s why I decided to get international business lawyer, and the founder of Dearin & Associates, Cynthia Dearin on to the show. For the last 23 years she’s been on a mission to help business owners to scale internationally and amplify their impact in the world. What a good mission!

And she’s well qualified to do so, having worked in the UK, the US, Europe and the Middle East, as an Australian diplomat and management consultant. She also spent three years as the CEO of the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Plus she’s the author of two books - Camels, Sheikhs and Billionaires and the one we talk about today titled Business Beyond Borders.

So right now, lose any limiting beliefs you have about your business not being suited to overseas expansion as Cynthia  shares:

How to bridge the cultural divide & building trust
Why businesses need an international strategy
How to navigate the challenges of global teams
Mistakes to avoid when selecting international markets
How to find your ideal international clients
And of course, the rules of international marketing & pricing

Serial entrepreneur Wayne Hamlet's motto is 'Never, ever give up' | #598

Serial entrepreneur Wayne Hamlet's motto is 'Never, ever give up' | #598

In January 2021, COVID forced serial entrepreneur Wayne Hamlet’s event hire business into liquidation. Two months later, he declared bankruptcy, losing everything, and took a job as a real estate agent. Not one for giving up, Wayne launched an idea with huge potential. In fact, if you’re a business owner, then you need it. It’s as simple as that! It’s a ridiculously inspiring episode 598 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Timbo Reid.

A little more about Smile Fred’s Wayne Hamlet …

If you’re a long time listener, you’ll know I tend not to interview owners of businesses in the start-up phase. There’s plenty of other podcasts doing that, plus I want to make sure you only get learnings from established business owners, who’ve got the runs on the board.

However, today’s guest is in start-up mode. So why’d I break the rules?

Because Wayne Hamlet’s story is super inspiring, and I actually want to give him a leg up.

He’s a serial entrepreneur who’s not afraid to have a crack. Unfortunately to date, after starting three businesses, his efforts have been rewarded with little more than experience.

Making matters worse, in January 2021, COVID forced his event hire business into liquidation. Two months later, he declared bankruptcy, losing everything, and took a job as a real estate agent.

Not one for giving up, at the age of 50, Wayne and his wife decided to roll the dice one more time and start Smile Fred, an online greeting card and gift box business that makes it ridiculously simple for you to send personalised cards and gifts within 5-minutes from wherever you are. An idea that every single one of us could use to show gratitude to our clients, suppliers, staff … anyone! Basically, it’s a business idea that makes the world a better place.

By the way, this chat may contain a trigger for some of you, as Wayne’s business journey certainly hasn’t been all roses. Who’s has?! If you’re doing it tough, and don’t have anyone to download to, then please call Lifeline or your local mental wellbeing support service.

Now …  Instead of starting with Wayne answering a question, take a listen to the audio from this video that appears on Smile Fred’s website. It not only explains how Smile Fred works, but why it exists and a little bit of Wayne’s back story.
