Last week, we set sail to Treasure Island. Using Billy Bones’ map, and a crew largely hand-picked by Long John Silver, Jim Hawkins, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, Captain Smollett and a handful of trustworthy men headed Silver’s crew of miscreants. But late one night, as Jim was asleep inside an apple barrel, he was suddenly jostled awake, and heard something that chilled him to the bone.

Last week, we met an old buccaneer who died at the Admiral Benbow Inn. Upon searching through the dead man’s sea chest, young Jim Hawkins discovered a certain packet that he secreted away. Shortly afterwards, a band of pirates ransacked the Inn looking for the package that Jim had in his pocket. Jim then went to see Dr. Livesy and Squire Trelawney, to try to make sense of it all.

Treasure Island. This was the first novel that I narrated. Now, 15 years later, with an upgraded mic, studio, and ability, I thought I’d give it another shot.
So much of our pirate lore comes from this book. Dead Man’s chest, a pirate with a parrot that talks, you’ll see. If you missed it the first time around, I hope you like revisiting my old stomping grounds. I must have read this book a dozen times, and it’s always an amazing adventure.

Welcome to Pirate Summer! Our series of piratical tales continues with The Pirates of Penzance! They said it couldn’t be done. They meant it probably shouldn’t be done. Nevertheless, we did it. You are about to hear the first installment of the audiobook version of The Pirates of Penzance. It’s based on the libretto from W. S. Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. I’ve sought to keep all the original material in the libretto, and adding whatever else was necessary to make the tale a narrative, rather than an operetta.
I’ve done this treatment with plays before, but not with operettas. I found it a rare opportunity to really focus on the sharp writing of the piece, once stripped of the beloved music. There’s nothing like live theatre. But here’s something that’s a bit more portable.
And now, The Pirates of Penzance, Part 1 of 2, by W.S. Gilbert.

Treasure Island

Really great episode. I’m in gripped suspense until the next one! Ripping, old horse!

Something

I love the stories but couldn’t care less about your “personal life.” People don’t come to this podcast for that. Start another podcast if you feel it is necessary. Also, there is no need to apologize for these great works of art by authors who more important than you. PLUS, their writing gives us glimpses of history that some can learn from. You insult people’s intelligence when you feel you have to in your condescending manner. But as I said before, the stories are great and you do a very good job with THAT part. Get rid of the 3-4 “jerk” mi Ute’s at the beginning.

Top quality

BJ is a superb narrator, and he chooses excellent tales.
