2982 - The Right Wing Court Assault On Civil Rights & Democracy w/ Mark Joseph Stern

2982 - The Right Wing Court Assault On Civil Rights & Democracy w/ Mark Joseph Stern

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent opening arguments that have come in front of the Supreme Court. First, they run through updates on today’s Georgia runoff, Ukraine’s offensive in Russia, another Fed interest hike, the continuing railway labor fight, and more, before diving into Kevin McCarthy exercising his beautifully weak leadership with Laura Ingraham. Mark Joseph Stern then joins as he dives right into 303 Creative v. Elenis, aka Gay Wedding Cake 2.0, exploring how Alliance Defending Freedom back Lorie Smith and 303’s fight to refuse even the possibility of making a website for a same-sex wedding, changing the entire spin of her business to center her argument that allowing the use of one of her templates (not even a personalized website) is the same as a personal endorsement of the marriage. He also dives into the recent debates on the Supreme Court floor, as Alito embarrasses himself attempting to draw a parallel between being queer and being a KKK member. Next, Mark, Sam, and Emma dive into the upcoming Moore v. Harper North Carolina gerrymandering case, outlining who the actors are, how it centers on the radical “Independent State Legislature” theory, and why the GOP is even pretending to think that a state legislature can fully ignore its constitution, courts, and governor when assessing a fair election, before wrapping up with the heartwarming note of why our democracy might come down to a single vote by Amy Coney-Barrett.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with John from San Antonio as he previews today’s Georgia Runoff and reflects on the Democrats’ shortcomings in the Midterms, also tackling Matt Yglesias becoming the millionth person to ask the same “just asking questions” question about trans healthcare, and talking with Marcus on military vaccinations. Hutt from Manhattan parses through the Squad largely voting against freight rail labor, Sean Row from Chicago discusses the platforming of the right, and Candace Owens responds to the Daily Wire infighting. They also briefly discuss Elon trying to keep up the spark from the Twitter files, plus, your calls and IMs!

2981 - How World War I Devastated The American Left w/ Adam Hochschild

2981 - How World War I Devastated The American Left w/ Adam Hochschild

Sam and Emma host Adam Hochschild, lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley School of Journalism, to discuss his recent book American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy's Forgotten Crisis. First, Sam and Emma run through this weekend’s updates on the Georgia runoff, the North Carolina power station sabotage, this week’s Supreme Court cases, and more, before watching Pete Buttigieg put his McKinsey training to use in his platitude-laden defense of putting down the freight rail workers. Adam Hochschild then joins as he dives right into the decade leading up to his World War I era of “American Midnight,” parsing through the various arenas of violence that were simmering at the start of the 20th Century, with mass suppression of labor struggles, immigrant movements, and Black communities all boiling over with the start of the War. Next, Hochschild focuses on Woodrow Wilson’s presidency, highlighted by a crackdown on civil liberties alongside an expansion of the federal presence both domestically and internationally, using the War as an opportunity to establish the US as a military power, before parsing more carefully through the role of the Espionage and later Sedition Acts, and the Wilson administration’s attack on public dissidents. Continuing post-war, Adam, Emma, and Sam walk through how the treatment of the Espionage Act evolved, including Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr’s eventual Supreme Court dissent and the reaction to the over 1000 arrests under these laws and their local counterparts, also exploring the impact of this suppression on the socialist and labor movements in the US, before diving into the story of Mitchell Palmer’s anti-immigrant crusade to help bolster a run for the presidency and how he was thwarted. Wrapping up, Hochschild tackles the role of prohibition in the American Midnight, and explores the impact this period had on the American political pendulum moving forwards.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Biden’s shallow attempt to frame his undermining of the freight rail workers as inevitable, Herschel Walker’s inscrutability, and Jimmy Dore’s argument on why having David Duke is a good presence in discourse, actually. They also parse through Matt Taibbi’s incredible reveal that Hunter Biden has a penis and PR teams exist (incidentally, also employed by the Right), Donald Trump talks about suspending the constitution while Republicans stay in line behind him, plus, your calls and IMs!

2980 - Biden off the Rails, Progressives v. Leadership & New Primary Schedule w/ Ryan Grim

2980 - Biden off the Rails, Progressives v. Leadership & New Primary Schedule w/ Ryan Grim

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at the Intercept, to round up the week in news, including discussions on the freight rail labor contract, the progressives’ role in the debate (and the Democratic party writ large), and Biden’s changes to the election cycle – but first, Emma and Sam run through updates on the Fed still losing the fight to booming labor numbers, the Georgia runoff, Boebert’s recount, and the end of free speech on Twitter, before diving into CNN’s recent coverage of the freight railers’ bargaining process. Ryan Grim then joins as he dives right into walking backward through the freight railers’ contract bargaining process, first exploring the corporation-enforced lockout and the companies’ attempt to impose a new contract on their workers, before jumping back to the story of the last few years with these companies cutting a third of the workforce, shifting towards streamlined, just-in-time processes (and really long trains), and creating such a brittle and non-redundant system that they feared would fall apart with a single sick day. Next, Ryan jumps into the leadup to Biden’s role in forcing this contract on the freight railers, following a narrow rejection of a previous version, and how he planned this maneuver around the midterms. Emma, Sam, and Ryan also tackle the progressives’ role in the vote, exploring what about voting to force a contract on workers could be progressive, why a split bill may not have actually hindered the fight very much, and why the Democrats refused to push the GOP into a touch position, before wrapping up with a discussion on Biden’s decision to shift around the primary schedule and the impact it could have.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma break down the court ruling that made Amazon managers in Staten Island read out a court decision to their employees telling them they can't union bust, as well as the state of the Georgia runoffs now that the Georgia Lieutenant Governor refused to vote for Herschel Walker. Then they dive into the Kanye West-Info Wars fiasco, and the right wing's cringe-defensive crouch response. Plus, your calls and IM's!

2979 - Right-Wing MELTS DOWN Over Rail Strike; A Call For "Health Communism" w/ Beatrice Adler-Bolton

2979 - Right-Wing MELTS DOWN Over Rail Strike; A Call For "Health Communism" w/ Beatrice Adler-Bolton

Emma hosts, Beatrice Adler-Bolton, co-host of the Death Panel podcast, to discuss her recent book Health Communism, co-authored with Artie Vierkant. First, Emma runs through updates on the US defense budget, the freight rail contract vote heading to the Senate, DC announcing a shift to free bus transport, South Africa facing its first presidential impeachment, and why progressives would ever force a contract on workers, before diving deeper into the far right’s unsurprising push against freight railers. Then Beatrice Adler-Bolton joins as she dives right into using the recent bargaining between freight railers and the regional monopolies they work for to paint a picture of how health and healthcare are used in the US – with even the existence of sick days being employed as a benefit or commodity, forcing workers’ health to fit in with the needs and desires of corporations and the private insurance agencies they work with. Zooming out, Emma and Beatrice then tackle the importance of understanding the value of health finance reform, while understanding that a much larger change is necessary to truly detach health from its hyper-individualized and commodified treatment under capitalism, with policies like Medicare for All certainly providing material benefits, but not actually changing how we relate to central resources like space and education. Next, Adler-Bolton dives into why health and health care are capitalism’s main vulnerability, particularly in its refusal to acknowledge and address greater systemic issues that affect us as a society rather than individuals, and its insistence on manufacturing scarcity, two qualities that don’t mix well with public health, exploring how even in the societies we recognize for their socialized healthcare (Scandinavia, England, etc), their commitment to capitalism actively undermines the power of this care. Wrapping up the interview, they explore the necessity of solidarity and an intersectional perspective in actually addressing public health issues beyond an isolated individual.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive into Binder’s recent crusade against the right-wing “Okay Groomer” brigade that somehow keeps being connected to groomers themselves, Sam Bankman-Fried’s recent (accidental) reveal that he’s one of the biggest GOP donors in secret, and Alex Jones’ meeting with Kanye and Nick Fuentes. Nick from Pittsburgh dives into SpaceX and the privatization of the final frontier, Tucker Carlson sees black people thinking about hockey as anti-white, and Marty from Houston explores trans allyship. These Long Wars from Pakistan discusses the impact of MR’s news coverage on the international level, Charlie Kirk discusses why everyday Americans need to buy Twitter, plus, your calls and IMs!

2978 - New York Hospital Tries To Screw Its Workers w/ Drs. Noa Nessim & Libby Wetterer

2978 - New York Hospital Tries To Screw Its Workers w/ Drs. Noa Nessim & Libby Wetterer

Sam hosts Drs. Noa Nessim & Libby Wetterer, 3rd year family medicine resident physicians and members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) who, in affiliation with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), are a part of organizing efforts at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. First, Sam runs through updates on NYC’s crackdown on not abusing homeless people, Hakeem Jeffries coming out on top for Democratic minority leader, and more, before diving into Rep. Mary Peltola’s pitch-perfect response to her party’s (Democrats) undermining of Rail labor, centering the needs of workers over the minimal profit of an already booming industry. Then, Drs. Nessim and Wetterer join as they dive right into Montefiore Medical Center’s sudden divestment from the Bronx communities that they have served for ages, shutting down clinics left and right while shifting funding towards regions served by private insurance agencies, before moving to the relationship between Montefiore Medical Center and its employees, walking through the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest on spurring organizing among residents and interns, and how Montefiore took advantage of the COVID squeeze on the healthcare industry by keeping their demands of doing more with less even as the pandemic eased. Next, they dive into the driving desire of a new moral compass behind the healthcare industry, exploring the networks of Doctors’ and Nurses’ unions across the US, and the impact that successfully unionizing Montefiore Medical Center would have, before wrapping up the interview by tackling McKinsey consultants’ role in spurring this disinvestment from their communities and exploring the best actions for the general public to take moving forwards. Sam also dives deeper into the horrendous mainstream coverage of the labor bargaining between freight rail workers and their employers, with all of the emphasis going to the impact these workers would have on our economy, and none of it on why companies with record-breaking profits are actively sacrificing it.
And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Charlie Kirk grapple with Kari Lake’s defeat as he once again fails to do the one thing he was hired to do (turn the youths conservative), David from Washington speculates on the recent missiles that fell in Poland, and Adam from LA explores how deep the GOP has poisoned the well of discourse around LGBTQ+ people. John from Cleveland discusses Jon Stewart’s interviews and why liberals lend credence to credentials, and Sam dives deep into Stephen Crowder’s incredibly cold open as he tiptoes through addressing the Kanye discourse while still pleasing his white supremacist followers. Sam also talks with Hannah about coverage of the Tigray War and the difficulty of speaking without expertise, plus, your calls and IMs!

2977 - BIDEN PUNTS RAIL STRIKE TO CONGRESS; Reports From COP27 w/ Kate Aronoff & Jonah Furman

2977 - BIDEN PUNTS RAIL STRIKE TO CONGRESS; Reports From COP27 w/ Kate Aronoff & Jonah Furman

Sam and Emma host Kate Aronoff, climate reporter for the New Republic, to discuss the developments coming out of the COP27 conference in Egypt. Then, they are joined by Jonah Furman of Labor Notes and author of the Who Gets The Bird? newsletter on SubStack to discuss the recent labor updates across the country, including the impending U.S. federal rail strike. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the UC teachers’ strike, the tally of over 400k early voting ballots in GA, Arizona suing an Arizona county over refusing to certify the election because of another Arizona county’s minor shenanigans, the upcoming marriage equality vote, and various Supreme Court ongoings, before parsing through Kevin McCarthy’s analysis of the GOP’s shortcomings during these past midterms. Kate Aranoff then joins as she explores what COP27 actually is, what environmental policy is being discussed, and who the major actors at the conference are – from the actual national delegates to the private companies’ observers. After tackling the particular role of petrol states at the conference, Kate, Emma, and Sam walk through the history of the UN’s climate change conference and the policy it has sponsored, with the US consistently throwing its weight against any compensatory funds for poorer nations or any policy that attempts to hold developed countries responsible for the environmental impact of their climate policy, as seen specifically with the Kyoto Protocols, before diving deeper into how COP27 has seen that begin to change, writing in a loss and damages fund. They wrap up the interview by tackling the actual material impact of these conferences and the US’s obstructionist actions. Next, Jonah Furman walks Sam and Emma through the particular labor obstacles presented for organizing Railway labor action, exploring the early passing of the RLA well before unionization took hold in the US, and how it creates countless federal obstacles to labor action in the industry. They wrap up by tackling the recent action taken by Joe Biden, in lockstep with Schumer and Pelosi, to push forward his rejected contract, and discuss where the workers’ fight can go from here.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Tim Pool’s recent fiasco of an interview with Kanye, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Nick Fuentes, as they get to the heart of Kanye’s anti-semitism claims, ponder the Jewish vote, and more. Troy from Washington talks about the moderate performance by moderates, Lord McAllister calls into school Sam on the legacy of the Lords of the Scotts, and Joe from Orange County expands on the Established Titles grift. Fox & Friends continue their campaign against education, plus, your calls and IMs!
