Cosmic Savannah - Ep. 20: Cosmic Chemistry

Cosmic Savannah - Ep. 20: Cosmic Chemistry

Hosted by Dr. Jacinta Delhaize & Dr. Daniel Cunnama.
In our first episode of the 2020s and Episode 20 we are honored to be joined by Prof. Ewine van Dishoeck who is a Dutch astronomer and chemist. She is Professor of Molecular Astrophysics at Leiden Observatory and the president of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

We discuss Ewine’s work in molecular astrophysics. She takes us on a tour of the formation of a solar system. All the way from the Big Bang, through clouds of gas where solar systems and planets are being born, all the way to the very building blocks of life!

We learn how molecules form in space, combine with dust and eventually grow into the massive planets we observe and indeed inhabit.
Ewine also tells us what it’s like to be the President of the largest organization of astronomers in the world and what she’s been up to during her visit to Cape Town!

Urban Astronomer - Ep. 57: Carol Botha Interview

Urban Astronomer - Ep. 57: Carol Botha Interview

Allen interviews Carol Botha. Carol is a passionate amateur astronomer, who has been heavily involved in astronomy outreach for a number of years and serves as a Slooh Ambassador, having recently achieved the highest rank on the public robotic telescope service. She talks about watching the Sputnik booster rocket pass overhead as a little girls, explains why she prefers sketching at the eyepiece to astrophotography, and shares telescope buying tips for newcomers.
Brief bio of the podcaster: Allen Versfeld is an amateur astronomer, an IT professional, a podcaster, a father of five beautiful kids and a barely competent chess player. He is also the director of the Citizen Science Section of the Astronomical Society of South Africa, where he promotes the uptake of Citizen Science among South African amateur astronomers.
