Within healthcare environments are some of the most critical applications. Patient and staff safety depends on the availability of machines and these machines are reliant on a consistent supply of electricity no matter the state of the primary supply. The HTM 06-01 covers the requirements of power in different risk areas within a healthcare facility. As part of the HTM 06-01, the minimum requirements of UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) and IPS (isolated power supplies) are set out. 

In this podcast, we discuss these UPS and IPS requirements and how they work together to provide a reliable supply of power with our guest speaker, Colin Walsh, Territory Sales Manager at Starkstrom. We also touch on the future of UPS and IPS technology and how lithium-ion could benefit healthcare estates in the future. 

Our relationship with Starkstrom dates back to 2007 and over the years we have worked together to provide numerous healthcare customers with complete critical power solutions including supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance. 

CPSS (Central Power Supply System) or CBS (Central Battery Systems) as they may also be known, and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) share many of the same design and operational similarities as one another. Both systems provide backup power in the event of a mains failure or fault, both utilise modules within the battery system to meet the required power rating and both contain similar components. In this Podcast, UPS and CPSS manufacturer Borri SPA discuss how UPS systems can be modified to meet the strict EN50171 regulation set out for CPS systems.

Over the last decade, we have seen a profound evolution of UPS systems. From their predominantly transformer based, industrial origins, today's UPS systems are more versatile, more flexible and more efficient than anyone believed they could be. It's these technological advancements that have enabled UPS manufacturer, Borri SPA, to branch out into applications not typically associated with uninterruptible power supplies, such as peak shaving and power buffering. 

In this episode of Talk Power, Graeme Tucker, Sales Director at Power Control, talks to Product Specialist Stefania Ceccarini from Borri SPA about how UPS systems can be modified to be used for these specialist applications and what's on the horizon for UPS systems in the coming years. Just to what extent can we expect UPS systems to evolve further?
