Kevin Folta is a full-time research scientist and professor of the horticultural sciences department at the University of Florida.
His lab uses genomics approaches to understand plant development, physiology and metabolism. He and his team are currently interested in the control of flavors in rosaceous crops. They also study how light controls key plant processes. Kevin oversees the daily activities of several grad students, postdocs, undergrads and visiting scientists.
Kevin also interacts with the public as a science communicator and writer, with over 500 public lectures and lay articles about science, food and farming. Kevin hosts the Talking Biotech podcast, producing over 250 weekly episodes over five years and 1.3 million downloads.
A prolific speaker, Kevin spent 5.5 years in university administration, working as Chairman of the Horticultural Sciences Department. In that capacity he managed the business aspects of a large academic department of 50-some statewide faculty, integration with administration, and millions of dollars in budgeting.
