Parenting can be tough, particularly when families are facing the uncertainty and isolation from COVID-19 social restrictions. As youth move into independence and making their own decisions-often with risk-parents can feel out of control and even desperate at times. I'm a mother and grandmother who has accumulated almost 20 years of parenting adolescents through many challenging situations. Today I welcome Professor Michelle Briegel from the Child and Youth Care Counsellor degree program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Michell brings together a career in Youth Justice and Child and Youth Care, as well as her personal experiences, to inform her many professional roles in the CYC field in Alberta. In this interview we discuss her family's story, how COVID-19 restrictions have impacted her teenager, practical knowledge about adolescent brain development, and her top tips to help parents deal with uncertainty and emotional regulation during this time.

Overcoming Uncertainty During COVID-19
In this episode I discuss the equation E+R=O (Canfield, 2006). We all experience events, like the pandemic, but our reactions influence the outcome. When we consider the effects of our reactions, and instead choose well considered responses, we can pivot to feeling a sense of control and self-efficacy. We can regain certainty by controlling what we can control, and trusting ourselves to be resilient on the face of change.
