When you move to a new town, it takes a long time to feel like you fit in. Many still feel like outsiders. Psalm 87 depicts outsiders and enemies being welcomed into the city of God. It teaches us that the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is such a sweeping message of welcome, that through it, God is able to make the enemies of Zion feel as though Zion is actually their home town, as though they were born and raised there. 1 Peter 3 makes a connection between Christ’s work of salvation and the flood of Noah. In fact, he gets even more specific. He says that Christian baptism has a correspondence to the flood and to Noah’s family being saved through the waters. In this passage we learn that even as God was wiping away the seed of the serpent in the flood, he was also preserving for himself a community of worshipers, baptizing them, and remembering his created world.
