The film directed by Dawn Porter chronicles his early life as a sharecroppers son, his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957, his training as a Freedom Rider fighting for equality and on the campaign trail supporting new incumbents.
It's a moving piece of film that would inspire even the naysayers of the Black Lives Matter movement. I talked to producer Erika Alexander about her reasons for making this relevant documentary.
