The 30 Percent Podcast is a podcast that focuses on the Kenyan music industry. The name is derived from the astonishing stat that between 30% - 40% of music played on Kenyan radio stations is Kenyan.

Our goal is to see this percentage go up significantly.

We will also broadly discuss global music industry trends and contextualize them through the lens of two music producers based in Kenya.

    A lot has happened recently! In today's episode, Sam and Afam talk about the #RejectTheFinanceBill2024 protests as well as their different outcomes. They talk about the Kenyan governments response to the peoples demands, and highlight some key issues they have observed. The boys also briefly discuss the recent roundtable talk that featured the President, Eric Latiff, Linus Kaikai, and Joe Ageyo.

    This leads them to mention some of the people doing good with everything that is going on, as well as mention the possibilities of more protests in the coming week.

They mention and commend different artists such as Charisma, who have joined the protests and are vocal about their stances. They also talk about some of the artists releasing music including Sabi Wu and Trio Mio creating a soundtrack to what is going on.

    They then mention the power of the internet and how the people have used it positively. The boys also talk about their hopes for these protests and the country moving forward.

KAMP presents their Q1 royalty reports leading Afam to do some heavy math (31:26). Next, Spotify integrates video into its platform and Audiomack makes it possible to create new versions of songs within its app (48:28). They then cover a few topics such as Rick Ross sending birthday wishes to Khaligraph Jones, Njeri announces that she will be taking a break from music, and Artists sharing their personal lives in their music for our entertainment (55:09).

    In today's episode, Sam and Afam talk about what they've been up to during the week. They get into some news. KECOBO selected PAVRISK, formerly known as PRISK, to manage royalty collection among other things, a decision that is being contested by another CMO, KAMP. They argue that they have a better track record in distributing royalties to artists, and allege that PAVRISK have failed at that task. Furthermore they claim KECOBO is compromised because of their choice (07:30). Are artists getting their moneys worth? Is it profitable to invest in music if the returns are not sustaining the artist themselves Afam answers this questions on todays "Quick Thoughts" segment (25:30). Sam and Afam then pay their respects to the recent people we have lost in the music industry (37:20).

    In today's episode, Sam and Afam talk about what they've been up to. Sam attended a Matt Ngesa show at Geco Cafe while Afam was busy preparing for a music release with one of his artists. They then get into some industry talk. Kenyan artist Otile Brown declared that we have no international artists in Kenya, and former Sauti Sol member Bien said he doesn't want to be involved in such debates, he just wants to make music. That leads the boys into a conversation on what makes an international artist and why we may or may not have any currently (11:00). Also, American comedian Dave Chapelle quietly snuck into the country for a show (40:50).

Nyashinski and Savara both announced that they will not be performing at the Madaraka Festival in the US due to the festival not being able to secure visas for the artists and their teams which sparks a discussion on the role of the government in helping push art outside of Kenya (11:15). Following that, they talk about the recent trouble brewing in the creative world. The Kenya Film Classification Board recently announced that they will be requiring licenses for YouTubers as well as require them to send their videos for "examination" before they are posted on the platform. Sam and Afam talk about this and what it may mean for creatives, and question whether it is even practical in the first place (23:00). Arbantone hit maker Stoopid Boy, who has been in the news recently for beefing with media personalities, turns his aim at Willy Paul on Mungai Eve's Platform (35:26).
