STORY 1: Marietta Names Beam New Police Chief

Interim Police Chief David Beam was officially named as the new chief of the Marietta Police Department by a 4-0 vote. Beam, a 38-year veteran of the department, had been serving in various leadership roles, including interim chief from 2006 to 2007. His priorities have included recruitment and retention of officers, successfully reducing vacancies from 29 to 4 since taking over. With extensive experience and qualifications, Beam expressed gratitude for the appointment and aims to uphold the department's legacy of service to the Marietta community. City Manager Bill Bruton expressed confidence in Beam's abilities, citing his long-standing dedication and proven results within the department.

STORY 2: Marietta School Board Hears Last Pitch to Stop Student Phone Use

The Marietta Board of Education is considering a plan to limit middle school students' access to cellphones and smartwatches using pouches locked by magnets throughout the school day. Superintendent Grant Rivera presented the final proposal, emphasizing a comprehensive approach involving community engagement and IT strategies. Stakeholder feedback has largely been positive, with students even offering insights. The district plans to partner with various institutions for research opportunities to measure the policy's effectiveness. The proposed $100,000 purchase of pouches and magnets will be voted on next Tuesday, with additional costs for securing magnets in classrooms. Community input will be sought before the final decision.

STORY 3: 3 Alcohol Ordinance Changes on Marietta’s Radar

The Marietta City Council is set to discuss three proposed changes to its alcohol ordinances, including allowing specialty wine shops to sell wine by the glass, permitting businesses to offer carry-out, curb service, and delivery of unopened alcoholic drinks, and allowing downtown merchants to sell liquor in the public right-of-way during city-sanctioned events. The changes aim to loosen restrictions on alcohol sales on the Marietta Square. The proposed revisions would expand the scope of the Ancillary Wine Tasting License to allow for consumption on premises, costing $541, and enable businesses to sell alcohol for carry-out and delivery.

STORY 4: Cobb Calls Referndum on 30 year Tax to Fund Transit

Cobb County is set to vote on a 30-year 1% sales tax for public transportation on November 5th. The referendum, approved along party lines by the Board of Commissioners, aims to raise $11 billion for transit improvements. Supporters argue it's necessary for growth and congestion relief, while opponents question its cost and effectiveness. The tax would fund an overhaul of Cobb's transit system, including rapid bus routes and on-demand "microtransit" services. Community outreach is underway ahead of the referendum, with voters asked to decide on the tax's imposition and associated debt issuance.

Kennesaw Police, currently lacking details on the victim's gender, age, or cause of death, noted no open cases matching the discovery. Marietta Man Drowns in Lake Allatoona After Tubing Incident

In a heartbreaking incident Sunday afternoon, a boating accident on Lake Allatoona near Marietta resulted in the tragic loss of a life.

Around 2:25 p.m., game wardens responded to a call about a boating accident near Little River Marina. A rental boat was tubing when 40-year-old Robbie Cornelius fell off the tube. Cornelius was not wearing a life jacket and immediately complained of leg pain upon entering the water.

Despite efforts by several individuals to rescue him, they had to abandon their attempts as Cornelius began to pull them under.

Game wardens, along with Cherokee Fire and EMS personnel, initiated a search using SONAR technology. Tragically, Cornelius was found at 16 feet of water just before 5 p.m. His body was subsequently recovered by a dive team and handed over to the Cherokee County coroner.

Cobb Transit Tax Would Increase Ridership Twelvefold

Cobb Transit Tax Would Increase Ridership Twelvefold

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, June 7th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cobb: Transit Tax Would Increase Ridership Twelvefold

Cobb County's bold proposal for a 30-year 1% sales tax aims at revolutionizing its transit system. This plan, unveiled recently, is under review by the Atlanta-region Transit Link Authority, with a crucial referendum scheduled for November 5th.

Cobb County anticipates that this sales tax will increase ridership more than twelvefold by 2050. The tax, if approved, would raise the county's sales tax from 6% to 7%, generating an estimated $11 billion. This funding would be used to construct 108 miles of rapid bus routes, several new transit centers, and a countywide "microtransit" service.

The ATL board has unanimously approved Cobb’s project list, signaling a strong step forward. ATL staff highlighted the conservative financial projections, focusing on federal funding without relying on state assistance.

The final decision now lies with the Cobb Board of Commissioners, who will vote next Tuesday.
