    Sanders takes lead in Nevada

    Sanders takes lead in Nevada

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders' commanding Nevada caucus victory made him a top target for his Democratic rivals and a growing source of anxiety for establishment Democrats worried that the nomination of an avowed democratic socialist could cost the party in November. At a rally at the University of Houston, Sanders said people overestimate how conservative Texas really is. Sanders' win solidified his front-runner status in the crowded field as the race turned to Saturday's presidential primary in South Carolina, where his moderate opponents scrambled to try to blunt the senator's momentum. Speaking with reporters, Joe Biden says Bernie Sanders may be the frontrunner, but it is about electability.

COVID-19 cases extend to the Middle East and nears 76,000

COVID-19 cases extend to the Middle East and nears 76,000

China's National Heath Commission reported 889 newly confirmed cases in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total in mainland China to 75,465. The coronavirus has infected 234 people in two prisons outside the province at the center of the epidemic in China and South Korea reported 52 new confirmed cases of the virus on Friday.

Plus: Afghan, international and Taliban forces will observe a seven-day period of reduced violence in Afghanistan beginning at 1930 UTC, or midnight local time. Iranians began voting on Friday in a parliamentary election likely to help hardline loyalists of the supreme leader tighten their grip on power as the country faces mounting U.S. pressure over its nuclear program and growing discontent at home. Syrian aid groups are bracing for a larger displacement crisis as families continue to flee in search of safety and supplies remain in short supply.

Roger Stone sentenced for obstructing justice

Roger Stone sentenced for obstructing justice

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Roger Stone, a veteran Republican operative and President Donald Trump's longtime confidant, to more than three years in prison for obstructing a congressional inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The Stone sentencing set off speculation of when President Trump might grant Stone a pardon. Trump issued 11 high-profile pardons earlier this week but said he was holding off for now. Before handing down the sentence, Judge Amy Berman Jackson criticized the administration for its handling of the case, calling Barr's intervention "unprecedented" and Trump's repeated public comments "entirely inappropriate." Criminal defense attorney and former CIA officer Jack Rice discusses the unusual nature of a judge excoriating a president.

Plus, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Saudi King Salman discussed security issues presented by Iran Thursday in Riyadh. One day before the meeting, Pompeo told reporters he was ready to negotiate with Iran, but was not in rush to sit with Iranian officials at the bargaining table.

Roger Stone sentenced to 40 months

U.S. President Donald Trump's close friend and confidant Roger Stone was sentenced today to 40 months in prison.  Hofstra University law professor James Sample speaks to International Edition about the sentence, the controversy over a number of President Donald Trump’s pardons, and the allegation Jullian Assange has made that the administration offered a pardon to him in exchange for saying that Russia was not involved in 2016 election meddling.

Plus a wrap of Wednesday’s Democratic Party Presidential Debate, the latest on the COVID-19 outbreak, why China forced out three Wall Street Journal reporters.
