Talking Race, Gender and Nursing with Navy Corpsman, Kevin Gibson BSN, RN

Talking Race, Gender and Nursing with Navy Corpsman, Kevin Gibson BSN, RN

SPECIAL ALERT: Adrianne is going to be in Nashville 11/20/21 at the NursesPodCon with some of your favorite nurse podcasters. Tik Tok phenom will be MCing a full day of live podcasts, CEUs, meet and greets, and whatever other shenanigans they can think up. In-person spots are VERY limited. Get your virtual or in-person tickets at goodnursebadnurse.com and go tell Adrianne hello!

    --------

In this episode, Adrianne has a good, long talk with ICU nurse, Navy Corpsman, and podcaster (AKA The Boot Nurse) Kevin Gibson. And, boy, the places this talk goes.
Kevin shares his journey of completing nursing school while on active duty and all the successes and challenges a journey like that brings. From his grueling schedule to his training in combat surgery, he recounts all the details of how he made it through while accomplishing some cool sh!t along the way.

Kevin also opens up on the topic of being a Black man in a predominantly female profession, focusing on his different intersections of life - gender, race, and the experiences he's had. Kevin also imparts some sage advice for young Black men considering nursing themselves.

All of this is very serious important talk, but don't let that fool you. Kevin is a fun, lighthearted person and shares some great stories. A few stories were left out - like his battle with a scorpion in his garage, and dealing with the Jan Brady of nurses (for those of you old enough to get the reference).

Finding Your Voice as a Nurse Activist with the Gritty Nurses, Amie Varley and Sara Fung

Finding Your Voice as a Nurse Activist with the Gritty Nurses, Amie Varley and Sara Fung

This episode has been burning a hole in Adrianne’s pocket, so to speak. Recorded back over the summer of 2021 while Adrianne was unemployed and unlicensed in Minnesota, she was able to get Amie and Sara of the Gritty Nurse podcast on the line (they’ve had a busy busy summer) to answer all her questions.

Their focus is on Amie and Sara’s activism in their home country of Canada, pushing for safety and respect for nurses. They have created spaces for nurses in forums that had no nurses at the table and they’re going to talk about how they did it.

These nurses also cover topics like:
Connecting with your community - just do it even if you think it will be small scale.
What makes you an authority? A professional? A leader?
How being openly political is not being unprofessional.
That uncomfortable conversations are not always inappropriate conversations
There is a time and place to upset the apple cart in the name of progress and change
Tips for talking to the media, placing yourself in places you belong but aren’t invited
Actionable tips for making your voice louder and your moves matter.

If you love this episode, you can catch more of Amie and Sara at grittynurse.com.

Caring for the Caregivers: Nurse Burnout Chat with Saloumeh Bozorgzadeh, PsyD

Caring for the Caregivers: Nurse Burnout Chat with Saloumeh Bozorgzadeh, PsyD

In this episode, Adrianne welcomes clinical psychologist and president of the Sufi Psychological Association, Saloumeh Bozorgzadeh PsyD to discuss the current burnout nurses are facing and how she and her organization have responded to this problem.

This is the part of this pandemic where many healthcare workers are maxed out and suffering from exhaustion. Many may not notice the symptoms in themselves because so many are just keeping afloat in the day-to-day. It may be easier to recognize it in each other and that’s exactly what Saloumeh saw.

She was noticing a kind of shellshock among hospital nurses and wanted to bring something to them to combat the effects of overwhelming stress, the witness of suffering, and overwork due to short staffing. But it had to be there in the moment, in the hospital, with no pressure on them to go home and have yet something else to do.

Thus Caring 4 Our Caregivers Initiative came to be. Please enjoy this episode where they discuss:

    - the Initiative and its grassroots beginnings
    - the delayed effects of pandemic stress on nurses
    - the how tablets became the vehicle for stress relief
    - the study regarding spirituality-integrated psychology
    - how this initiative spread to hospitals nationwide
    - the scientific evidence of these modalities
