Meet Leticia: Business Owner, Proud Aboriginal Woman, Advocate (Part 2)
Welcome back to another episode! In this 2-part episode, we hear from Leticia, a young Aboriginal woman born on Wiradjuri country. Leticia is a zealous advocate for not only herself but others around her, and now a successful business owner, specialising in graphic design and advocacy workshops. She talks about her journey of self-discovery, the importance of her culture, overcoming stigma as both a child and an adult, and now her ever-evolving journey as a business owner. Leticia’s story is inspiring and she’s got so much knowledge and wisdom to share for any young people who haven’t yet “found their voice” – so make sure you listen in. One of CREATE’s major campaigns is the Snap that Stigma initiative, where we want to showcase how incredible the young people we work with are, to overcome this negative image dogging young people with a care experience.

Meet Emily: Advocate, Entrepreneur, Mother
Emily is a passionate advocate, who has built her whole career around sharing her story and advocating for change. In this episode, we hear from Emily about her life growing up in care, the stigma she faced as a child in care, when she become a “young mum”, and again as she started building her business in the advocacy space without having a qualification. Having worked with CREATE, Adopt Change and many other organisations closely for years, Emily has been instrumental in pushing for systemic change in the care system and is passionate about seeing barriers broken down for young people with a care experience – particularly around employment and education. Emily’s passion and fire for change is contagious, so listen in to feel inspired by her #SnapThatStigma journey. Meet Adina: Lawyer, Social Worker, Advocate
Hear directly from young people with a care experience about their lives, how they’ve overcome adversity and gone on to achieve incredible things! In this first episode we hear from Adina. Adina grew up in care, and has now gone on to become a qualified lawyer and social worker, an enormously caring young women and an all-round great human. Adina’s story shows the impact of stability – how important it is for young people to have security during their formative years. With a strong support system, Adina graduated from high school, pursued and completed tertiary education in law and social work and secured a full time job, all while continuing to advocate for systemic change. Adina’s story, as with so many of the young people we talk to, completely rejects the negative stereotyping faced by those in out of home care. Thanks for helping us to #SnapThatStigma Adina!

Welcome to episode three of ‘Voices in Action’, a podcast by the CREATE Foundation – the national consumer body for children and young people with a care experience. We are the voice - for children and young people in care across Australia. This podcast is designed to give young people a platform to discuss issues important to them. As part of our celebrations of NAIDOC Week 2020, we are excited to bring you an interview between a CREATE Young Consultant and CEO and Founder of ID Know Yourself, Isaiah Dawe. Isaiah himself grew up in out-of-home care, and was estranged from his culture from quite a young age. As he grew up, he was able to reconnect with his family and culture, which helped him in developing his identity. Isaiah then started ID Know Yourself, an organization which supports young Aboriginal people with experience in out-of-home care in reconnecting with their culture, and nurtures their development outside of care.
The interview was incredibly insightful and shone a light on a number of issues faced by children and young people in the care sector, including the challenging journey of identity and cultural connection experienced by many First Nations young people with a care experience.
