Yes, it’s been a while. Today is the last day of 2023, which prompted me to break the long pause and pick up where I left off in haste. Last episode was recorded 5 months ago in mid-July. I promised my listeners useful expressions while travelling in Japan, which remains unfulfilled. Don’t worry, I will get to that in early 2024.
皆さんお久しぶりです。今日は2023年最終日です。大晦日に慌ててポッドキャストを更新しております。前回のエピソードは7月の中旬で５ヶ月も経ってしまいました。日本旅行中の便利な表現の紹介を予告しておりましたが、もうしばらくお待ちください。
Today, I’d like to ponder the word 「天職 ten shoku」, which means calling or vocation in English. The reason I chose this topic is because I recently got a job, 10 months after I got laid off in December 2022. This year has given me many teachable moments, and I feel very thankful for the wisdom I gained in 2023.
さて、今回は天職について考えたいと思います。英語ではcalling又はvocationと言います。このテーマを選んだ理由は、ちょうど一年前の2022年12月にレイオフをうけ 、最近、１０ヶ月越しで再就職できたからです。今年は数多くの試練を乗り越えたと思います。今となっては、今年得た一つ一つの教訓をありがたく感じます。
The word 「天職 ten shoku」consists of 『天 ten』which means heaven, and 「職 shoku」 occupation. The word vocation comes from Latin, which means to summon or to call. It’s interesting to see that these words both English and Japanese express a similar idea that people are being called by God for these positions.
「天職」は文字通り天から授かった職業を表します。英語でcallingとvocationと言います。Vocationはラテン語で呼ぶ、又は召喚することを指します。日本語も英語も、神から呼ばれ、与えられた職業という概念をよく表していると思います。
I used to feel incomplete because I haven’t found my vocation yet. But then I came realized that we are all trying to figure out one step at a time, one day at a time.
以前は、天職がわからない自分の未熟さを感じていましたが、最近になって、私たちは皆、毎日一歩一歩歩み、学んでいる事に気づきました。
Lately, I feel like my day is fruitful when I find one person to show kindness and another person to thank.
誰かに親切にし、誰かに感謝できたらその一日は有意義だったと思う今日この頃です。
