It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Joanna Wuest, assistant professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College and author of the book Born This Way: Science, Citizenship, and Inequality in the American LGBTQ+ Movement, to discuss her recent piece in Jacobin entitled "The Best Way to Secure LGBTQ Rights: Unions." Then, she speaks with David Broder, historian and Europe editor at Jacobin, author of Mussolini’s Grandchildren: Fascism in Contemporary Italy, to discuss the recent EU elections, and the upcoming elections in the UK and France. First, Emma runs through updates on stalling ceasefire talks, Israel’s continuing aggression in Gaza and elsewhere, some surprisingly solid SCOTUS decisions, Congressional action, RFK’s floundering candidacy, serious global warming, growing union support in the US, and Louisiana’s Ten Commandments-Commandment for school classrooms, also parsing through the recent UNHRC report on the crimes of war, crimes against humanity, and crimes of extermination, gender and sexual-based violence, and use of starvation and collective punishment. Professor Joanna Wuest then joins, diving right into the inspiring queer advocacy work coming from the new generation of union leaders, before stepping back to tackle the (multi-decades) long standing relationship between labor and queer rights, with unions providing much stronger protections from discrimination and important economic security where the US government failed to do so. After touching on the deep history of the relationship between anti-LGBTQ scapegoating of educators, and where Ron DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” policy stands within that context, Professor Wuest and Emma wrap up with the important role queer folks have played in the major Starbucks unionization push over the last few years. David Broder then walks Emma through what the EU Parliament actually is and does (not much), and contextualizes the broader results of the recent round of elections, before parsing through the more worrying results out of France and Germany, which saw strong gains from the far-right RN (of Marine Le Pen) and AfD. Expanding on the France of it all, Broder tackles French PM Macron’s absurd decision to respond to the right-wing gains by calling a snap national election, what it tells us about liberals’ continued preference of the far-right over the progressive left, and what it could mean for the future of Le Pen’s party, using Italy’s Giorgia Meloni as a parallel to Le Pen’s seeming liberal-appeasing-pivot to more conventional, pro-establishment politics. After discussing the more radical brand of fascism coming out of Germany’s AfD, Emma and Broder wrap up with a brief assessment of the state of the left in Europe, and the ongoing failure of the retreat to the center (as seen in the UK).

Sam and Emma speak with Elie Mystal, justice correspondent and columnist at The Nation, to discuss the recent rulings by the Supreme Court and what is still to come. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s foreknowledge of Hamas’ 10/7 attack, US military aid to Israel, today’s primaries, a new path to citizenship, bump stock legislation, IRS policy, Adobe’s DOJ problem, FEMA, and Philly’s falling murder rates, before parsing a little deeper through the new reports on Israel’s 3-week heads-up on Hamas’ terror attack last October. Elie Mystal then joins, diving right into the diligent delays in SCOTUS’ refusal to take on Trump’s immunity case as a perfect example of the differing approaches to a justice's reign between the conservatives and the liberals, with the former insistent on getting what they want, getting paid, and getting out of there, while the latter gets hung up in symbols and institutionalism. Mystal then looks to the recent Supreme Court decision to strike down the Trump-era ban on bump stocks, parsing through Justice Thomas’ decision to weigh the legality from the perspective of the gun, rather than the shooter, before briefly running through SCOTUS’ recent rejection of a challenge to Mifepristone, and what it can teach us about where this far-right Court is looking next. Wrapping up, Elie, Sam, and Emma unpack the future of the Supreme Court’s attacks on the Chevron Doctrine and the administrative state.

Happy Monday! Sam & Emma speak with Astra Taylor, writer, documentarian, & co-founder of the Debt Collective, and Leah Hunt-Hendrix, co-founder of Way to Win & the philanthropy network Solidaire, to discuss their recent book Solidarity: The Past, Present, and Future of a World-Changing Idea. First, they run through updates on Israel’s genocide in Gaza, skyrocketing executive pay in the US, the electoral impact of Trump’s conviction, the GOP’s $895B culture war defense bill, Maryland’s marijuana pardons, AIPAC’s $20 Million investment in George Latimer, the threat to public health that is Social Media, and Alex Jones’ legal woes, before parsing through Donald Trump’s continued insistence that he is the most mentally fit President of all time (certified by the guy that ran his presidential pill mill). Astra Taylor and Leah Hunt-Hendrix then join, diving right into the idea of “solidarity” as a material concept of social cohesion, with roots in the holding of a common debt between Roman farmers, and as a central tenant in the development of France’s welfare state during the Industrial Revolution. Expanding on this, Taylor and Hunt-Hendrix unpack the role self-interest plays alongside solidarity, painting a distinction between the strict divisions of reactionary solidarities (e.g. White Supremacy, ruling class) and the malleable identity of transformational solidarity as they demonstrated the failure of “zero-sum” thinking, and how transformational solidarity extends the benefits of social progress to all. Next, Astra, Leah, Sam, and Emma have an extensive conversation on the “Scam” of philanthropy, from how it promotes movement capture by major capitalist donors to it’s effective purpose as a tax haven for the wealthy, before they wrap up the interview with the role of the state in undermining the ability to foster solidarity, and how its power can just as well be used to promote it.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch George Latimer do the classic liberal tap-dance around his unconditional support for Israel’s genocide, parse through Israel’s crystal-clear messaging on their goal of collective punishment, and talk with Jose from LA about the problems of Market Socialism. Michael Knowles and Colorado State Rep. Holtorf perfectly demonstrate the right’s enthusiasm for subjugating women, and a former WH Communications Director takes on the ELITIST concern that just because Trump tried to overturn one election, he might do it again, plus, your calls and IMs!

Then, she speaks with Hayden Clarkin, also known as the Transit Guy on Twitter, to discuss New York Governor Kathy Hochul's recent decision to delay congestion pricing. First, Emma runs through updates on reproductive care in the US, ceasefire negotiations, Israel’s continued siege on Gaza, Biden’s asylum ban, Ukraine-US relations, Oklahoma’s Supreme Court decision on reparations for the Tulsa Race Riots, Elon’s harassment allegations, and the crackdown of Argentina’s police state, also diving deeper into the Supreme Court’s recent dismissal of a challenge to Mifepristone, and when the other shoe will drop. Greg Stoker then joins, diving right into his military background, the major influence that working with “kinetic” Drone strikes under Obama (alongside the following decade of growth) had in awakening him to the indiscriminate violence of US imperialism. Shifting focus, Stoker looks to Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Gaza, which has made the US military look nearly discriminate by contrast, walking through how Israel has eviscerated every central piece of infrastructure of Gaza society, and demonstrated a divide in the tactics of Western Imperialism and outright genocide. Expanding on this, Greg and Emma tackle the narrative around ongoing ceasefire negotiations, assessing why this conflict has largely been a success for Hamas and a failure for Israel, with no real end in sight for the occupier, also touching on Israel’s increasingly irrational violence towards other regional actors like Iran. Wrapping up the interview, Stoker touches on the US’ dwindling soft power, what that means in the context of their supposed foreign policy pivot to Asia, and what THAT means in the context of US support for Israel’s genocide. Hayden Clarkin then slowly walks Emma through the background for NY Gov. Hochul’s astounding recent decision to kill New York’s congestion pricing plan for Manhattan, with the policy already a long time coming at the time of NYC’s 2017 MTA state of emergency, when it was first put forward as a solution to issues of traffic and transit maintenance and upgrades, with its 2023 approval immediately seeing the launching of a thousand lawsuits from NY’s Jersey neighbors over its supposed cost, and ultimately leading to Hochul’s move. Expanding on this, Transit Guy assesses who this pricing plan would *actually* impact (some 1.5% of commuters into Manhattan), the myriad exemptions ironed in, and the wide array of transit-infrastructure-related projects it would fun, also touching on the statistics behind Manhattan’s ongoing traffic crisis. Wrapping up, Clarkin discusses the new lawsuit from NYC Comptroller Brad Lander over this killing of myriad major MTA projects, and the unsurprising financial influences behind this fiasco.
