Update: We have just re-released the first 8 episodes of the podcast, so people can enjoy the first episodes with an improved sound quality! We give a longer explanation at the start of the episode.

    S1. Swedish Civilian Dog Tags

    S1. Swedish Civilian Dog Tags

Surprise! This is our first special episode, breaking the chronological order to talk about an interesting historical object we found in our flat recently. Sweden issued civilian dog tags to all new born citizens for 50 years between 1960 and 2010. But why? We look into it and also have a brief chat about the history of dog tags in general.

    2. Stone Age Swedes - After The Ice

    2. Stone Age Swedes - After The Ice

We kick off our podcast with a look at how Sweden physically formed after the last ice age. We meet the first people to move in after this change and see how they lived during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic Ages. Expect Mammoths, hunter-gatherers and a very special lady - Bäckaskogskvinnan!

    S2. Swedish Urban Bomb Shelters

    S2. Swedish Urban Bomb Shelters

We're taking a break from our usual chronological journey and instead visit a historical site in our own home. In what could be seen as part two of our special episode about dog tags, we continue to look at Sweden's preparations for war in the 20th century. Just like with the dog tags, we found that we're living with a reminder of history, namely a bomb shelter in our own basement! We go to have a look and explore the background as to why there were so many shelters built in Sweden.

    3. Stones, Farming and Goats

    3. Stones, Farming and Goats

We continue investigating the Stone Age in Sweden, this time focusing on the Neolithic period. We find out how farming was developed, why so much fire was involved and touch on the amazing graves and burial chambers we will focus on more next time around.

S3. Intelligent Speech - Sweden during WWII

S3. Intelligent Speech - Sweden during WWII

Surprise! It's not time for a regular episode this week, but instead we're bringing you an extra special episode. Back in April we had the pleasure of giving a talk at the Intelligent Speech Conference 2021. This is the recording of said talk, plus a brand new intro and outro that we've recorded specially.
In our talk we look at how and why Sweden, unlike all of its neighbours, escaped invasion during the Second World War. We discover how one natural resource can make all the difference, and how the decisions of a few politicians on one fateful weekend echoed throughout history. Last but not least, we have a quick look at how Sweden was affected by the war, even though it wasn't invaded. Beware of accidental bombings!

Funny, informative, always a delight

This podcast has been a wonderful introduction to my new adopted home. And the degree of information packed into an episode is truly impressive. In fact, I have now had several conversations with native Swedes who said that I seem to know far more about their country’s history than them! (So long as the conversation stays in the 14th century and before) Which is really just to say: I really need Chris and Åsa to keep things up so that I can start holding my own when it comes to the House of Vasa, the Reformation, and beyond!

Keeps getting better and better!

Excellent. I started this podcast a few months ago, and have finally caught up through the 70 episodes. I feel simultaneously satisfied from having learned so much, but also free since I can listen every other week instead of every day, and can enjoy other podcasts or music in between episodes.

As an American that recently moved to Stockholm, I have found it fascinating to learn about the history of my new home. The hosts are great storytellers, and I’ve particularly enjoyed the stories of Sweden’s more clever leaders, especially Olga of Kiev, Birger Jarl, and the ongoing tales of Queen Margareta. I’ve repeated many of their stories to friends at parties, and I assume the blank faces I receive in response are simply due to their minds being blown.

P.S. Since my dog Diego is no longer allowed to use the internet, I’m also including his review below.

“Woof woof. 4.5 out of 5 stars. This podcast has been fantastic at keeping my owner entertained on our daily walks, so I get even more exercise outdoors even though it has been very cold. However, I must deduct half a star as there has been not enough focus on the history of pets in Sweden. The hosts are clearly biased toward their own species, and could do more to give recognition to the pet cats, bears, and especially dogs that ruled over the last couple millennia. The recent shoutout to Princess Filippa’s horses was a good start though, so I’m optimistic for the future. Woof woof woof. Woof.

Pictures not showing

I love your podcasts and I can say I am addicted to it. Everyday on my way to work and back to home, I listen to this amazing podcast. Before finding it, I was kind of disappointed since all of the podcasts about Sweden history are in Swedish and I could not understand them. But when I found this perfect Flatpack History of Sweden in English, I was so happy, specially that it is explained chronically. It could not be better than this. Thank you for your perfect work.
One thing that I am struggling with is that the pictures of the episodes do not show. I listen to the podcast on “podcast” app on my iPhone. Could not solve this problem which is really annoying.
