There was a lot going on in Japan post-WWII. A lot. With most people trying to scrape together enough money just to have a meal, any extra mouths to feed were an actual death sentence. Not an ideal situation to find yourself in during the years of 1947-1949 when 2.6 billion babies were born, 𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮. That’s 7.8 billion new lives being added to the mix in just 3 years!!! Give it a goog & you’ll find that as of 2020, there are 7.8 billion people in the world 🤯 This is no excuse for what Miyuki Ishikawa and her co conspirators did, but it really puts this case into perspective. On June 16, 1944 (76 years ago, today) George Stinney Jr was executed for a crime he did not commit. At the age of 14, he became the youngest person to be executed in the United States. It took 4 minutes for the murder (I said it) to be completed. He was too small for the electric chair so he was forced to sit on top of the Bible that he was carrying to the chamber. A literal Bible booster seat. From the time of his arrest to the time of his death, he couldn’t stop asking “Why? Why would they kill me for something I didn’t do?” From start to finish, it was 83 days. His trial was only 3 hours long. The jury consisted of 10 men, all white. This episode is titled “Forever Young” in memory of Derrick Robie, whose tombstone reads “𝑰𝒏 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈.” On August 2, 1993, Eric Smith (13) brutally murdered Derrick Robie (4). To this day, only a handful of details have been released to the public and they’re enough to make me ask “what in the actual fu**?!” at least a dozen times. Murder is a heinous act, but there’s something about children killing children that is almost too much to bear.
