"Constitutional, Institutional, Systematic Change"-- 2 Women Leaders On Black Progress in Asheville

"Constitutional, Institutional, Systematic Change"-- 2 Women Leaders On Black Progress in Asheville

In this episode, Valerie Smith-Jackson, AKA "Priestess SuperVixen," sits down with two women who are leading Asheville's equity work and helping connect people of color in our community with resources for their businesses and daily lives, as well as cultural events.

An Asheville native, Dewana Little is the Executive Director of the YMI Cultural Center that was founded in 1893 and thought to be the oldest African American Cultural Center in the nation, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Dewana is the founder of Positive Changes Youth Ministries, which takes local students on tours of colleges and universities, in particular Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Alexandria Ravenel is a native New Yorker who moved to the South, her parents’ birthplace and decided to make a difference in the lives of women. She opened a women’s empowerment bookstore and then an art gallery for underground artists located in the heart of the White elite district of Broad Street, the line her grandmother warned her not to cross during childhood visits. Six years later, observing the need for quality education for families like hers, Alexandria founded a school which she ran for 16 years. Alexandria moved to Western NC in 2015 and is inspired by her teenage child, co-leads a women’s group and teaches elementary children. In other times, she is discovering ways to bring authenticity and clarity into conversations with adults committed to teaching about the intersectionality of race, class and gender. Alexandria now leads Noir Collective. Noir Collective works in partnership with the YMI Cultural center to emphasize economic and community growth and development, enrichment of youth experience, and bringing our community Black businesses back to “The Block”.
