Filmspotting Presents: The Film That Blew My Mind - Kristen Johnson on All That Jazz
Director and legendary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson is known for nonfiction work that is inventive, artful, expressive, and maximal. The same can be said of the film that blew her mind -- Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz. The semi-autobiographical film brings us Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), a peripatetic creative force working simultaneously to mount a major Broadway production and complete post-production on a feature film, all while maintaining a lifestyle fueled by cigarettes, pills, one-night stands, and Visine, and still finding time for his adoring 12-year old daughter, Michelle. We learn why the iconic film first transfixed Kirsten, and how she continues to be inspired by Fosse’s ingenious use of dance, documentary, theater, music, and more. Host John Cooper shares his personal ties to the film, calling on his days in New York’s theater scene of the 1970s. And co-host Tabitha Jackson (a.k.a. Wife of Kirsten) does her level best to maintain her professional distance as the conversation unfolds.

Great podcast
The only podcast that reviews films that I listen to. Entertaining and thoughtful discussions.
Essential listening
This is the best podcast devoted to film that I've come across. The episodes tend to be long, but so rewarding. I especially enjoy what comes out of the opposing views on certain films and scenes. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in films and filmmaking.
Has fallen off
Adam and Josh were great company when I found my way back to watching movies more seriously about five years ago, after a ten year sports-focused hiatus. Especially their top 5-lists have opened my eyes to many films.
However, last year I found myself, more often than not, skipping episodes as I started to be more and more hesitant towards their approach to movie watching. For instance, they sometimes have a real high-brow attitude towards certain actors or genres. Instead of just letting other people like films or actors, e.g. Adam Sandler, they make fun of the fact that they think it is so bad. I used to be the same way, so I recognize the behavior. Lately, I have been gravitating towards a more inclusive and fun-based experience and it has been much more rewarding. If you like film, I recommend adding The Big Picture and The Rewatchables to your podcast rotation.
As a former student of film science, I understand that there is more to a film than what immediately meets the eye. However, that eye is always in the beholder and Adam and Josh are at their best when they are cognizant of that.
