Finding Refuge in the United Kingdom Amaris Grondin

This is a special episode that focuses on the European Union, rather than the United Kingdom. Even after Brexit, it is important to understand the immigration system the United Kingdom has been a part of for the last seven years to gain a more precise view on how refugees entered the country during these times. This episode explains what the Dublin III Regulation is by exploring its initial objectives and why the regulation has failed to fulfill them. It then goes into the European Commission's proposition of reform to find a more effective immigration system within the European Union. 

In this first episode, we explore three regulations: the Carrier Sanctions Directive 2001/51/EC, the UN Geneva Convention on the Status of a Refugee and the Asylum and Immigration Appeals Act of 1993. Aminata is a refugee from Sierra Leone who entered the United Kingdom in 1993, a time when regulations were going through drastic changes.
