Episode 088: Scarecrow Gone Wild (2004)

In this episode, we dig into another listener suggestion and tackle what may be our first ever troll submission; or is it? Buckle up and shield your mind as we descend into schlocky shelf-warmer sequel territory to check out Brian Katkin's Scarecrow Gone Wild from 2004. Together, we riff our way through the film while puzzling over the many decisions made with its plot and production. But before all that, Jason sings praises for the latest Mad Max flick and Dustin weighs his undying love for Full Moon against a pair of disappointing features. And so much more!
Special thanks to Christian for suggesting we check this one out. Got a movie you champion? A hidden gem you think needs more love? Just want to see more discussion on a particular film? We want to check out the movies you suggest to us. Write in at genreexposure@gmail.com or contact us on your favorite form of social media and shoot us a movie recommendation.

    Episode 087: Heroic Purgatory (1970)

    Episode 087: Heroic Purgatory (1970)

In this episode, we get lost into the absurdly surreal world of Kiju Yoshida's Heroic Purgatory from 1970. Serving as Dustin's Lynchian avant-garde counter pick to our prior film, this one covers much of the same ground, focusing and drawing inspiration from the same student revolts that served as source material for Kichiku; only everything is a whole lot weirder. Jason finds appreciation in the film's liminal nature, but weighs that against the absurdity of the film's narrative. Dustin goes off the arthouse deep end, celebrating the film's many odd aspects. But before all that, the gauntlet is hurled down as we talk AI art being used in film. And so much more!

    Dustin's J-Horror Journal Episode 01: Death Forest (2014)

    Dustin's J-Horror Journal Episode 01: Death Forest (2014)

In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, we've had a bit of a scheduling crisis making Jason unavailable to record. So Dustin takes to the microphone solo to chat more about Japanese Horror. We've decided to spin the prior filler episode in this style into its own series that for now will crop up during emergency situations like this. For this official inaugural episode, Dustin chats about the 2014 flick Death Forest, which somehow spawned a four sequel franchise and draws inspiration from a killer little indie horror game. He chases down not only the history, but goes on a tangent about Slenderman after realizing the game's similarities to The Eight Pages. All that and more!
With any luck, we shall return to our regularly scheduled program in the usual two weeks out. While this is mostly meant as filler, if you dig this and want to hear more of these, reach out and let us know.
