The big swing point in the coming week, starting 10 June, will doubtless be the interest rate decision in the US. The Federal Reserve is not expected to move, but with the Swiss National Bank, the Swedish Central Bank and the European Central Bank having cut rates, the starting gun has been fired. The big question is with inflation still simmering, is the Federal Reserve right to wait? There is also a Friday 14th rate decision from the Bank of Japan. Earnings are thin on the ground, but Oracle, still being led by the man who founded the company almost 47 years ago, Larry Ellison on 16 June 1977, reports Q2 earnings after the closing bell on Tuesday 11th. The US Federal Reserve has been closely watching wage growth out of concern that faster-than-normal pay gains may add to inflation pressures. Wall street continues to defy gravity. One area of support for equities comes from investors close to retirement. John Stoltzfus, Chief Investment Strategist at Oppenheimer Asset Management says investors are looking to invest in stocks for retirement purposes at a time when it is projected that US social security benefits could be at risk of being reduced in the not-too-distant future. With scheduled corporate news in the background, traders will have a heightened sensitivity to the FX markets. On Thursday there is the ECB rate decision. As IGTV’s Jeremy Naylor explains, it’s not the decision itself after the green light was lit last week, by ECB chief Christine Lagarde, it’s more about whether the cut is one and done or if there are more to come this year. Other rate decisions in the coming week are in Canada and India.
