"What are more affordable ways to reach a wider audience with my art?" - Denise Lafer E81

"What are more affordable ways to reach a wider audience with my art?" - Denise Lafer E81

Ep81 – Denise Lafer is an artist who uses multiple different media in her work. She wants to get her work in front of more people and create a community, but finding the time to do so while working full-time and raising two small children has been difficult. Denise dreams of building an art business that will replace her day job so she has more time to spend with those she loves.
It intimidates Denise when she hears people say you have to build a website, develop your own brand and do so many other things before you can put yourself out there. The fear of overinvesting in all these things and getting ahead of herself have been a roadblock for Denise. And she says, honestly, she doesn’t know how to get her work in front of a bigger audience without making that investment first.
Recently, Denise started doing occasional workshops to put herself out there in a less intimidating way. The feedback she’s received and satisfaction she’s experienced have been a boost to her confidence, and she’s even started applying to open calls for art by galleries.
Listen in as I help Denise with a strategy to build a community and work towards creating a full-time income with her art business.

“How can I build enough trust to successfully expand my team?” - Chanelle Jefferson E80

“How can I build enough trust to successfully expand my team?” - Chanelle Jefferson E80

Ep80 – Chanelle Jefferson is a blind contour artist, meaning she draws without looking at the canvas. She is a storyteller and drawer first and a painter second. Her journey as an artist began by processing her own trauma and pain, which then became storytelling through her experiences and transmuting her pain into artwork and light. Chanelle also takes commissions to tell the stories of other people who resonate with her work.
Chanelle is also trained as a counselor and an energy, mind and emotions practitioner. Not only does she work with people one on one, but she also offers retreats with the goal of helping participants get to the root of their work and move beyond what triggers them and holds them back.
Chanelle’s business continues to grow, but with growth comes the need to expand your team. Chanelle is struggling to bring someone into her business because she fears not being able to find someone that will care for it the way she does.
Listen in to hear more of Chanelle’s story and the advice I share on expanding her team.

She has decided not to do any shows for a year, which means finding other ways to bring in an income is essential.

"How do I define who I am as an artist and write an elevator speech?" - Maura Kealy Ogden E78

"How do I define who I am as an artist and write an elevator speech?" - Maura Kealy Ogden E78

Ep78 – Maura Kealy Ogden is an artist and collector of images and other things. She paints fine art but is diving into her new business of creating collage pieces using found objects.
Maura enjoys the experience of creating and loves to share it with people. That is why she tells stories with her art. She believes that humanity exists in the traces of people’s lives, things left behind that can tell their story.
The dilemma for Muara lies in how to merge her two passions, creating fine art and creating collage pieces, and figuring out the best way to brand her art business. She doesn’t see her collage pieces as fine art but loves to create them because they bring joy to her and to others.
Listen in as I help Maura unlock the why behind what she creates and develop an elevator speech to build her brand.

"I'm ready to simplify my art business and find my flow state." - Christie Owen E77

"I'm ready to simplify my art business and find my flow state." - Christie Owen E77

Ep77 – Christie Owen is an abstract artist and designer from Oklahoma. Her work can be described as earthy and tranquil, with a focus on finding beauty in the imperfections. I’ve known Christie for several years, and we have experienced many of the ups and downs of being artists and entrepreneurs together.
Currently recovering from burnout, Christie is switching gears and trying new things. With the goal in mind of finding her flow state once again, she is allowing herself more time to play with different mediums, changing surface textures and not overthinking the desired outcome.
While change isn’t always easy, Christie is determined to simplify her life and reconnect with the joy of creating. She is committed to exploring new ways to bring in enough income with her art business to put her daughter through college while also continuing her job as a designer.
Listen in as we talk through balancing both life and business.

As Andrea became more successful, she realized that she could provide valuable insight and assistance to other artists wanting to start their own mural business.

EP01

Dear Jessica,

Thank you interesting and constructive conversations about art, which I listen to frequently. In this case, it was How to Open the Doors to Collaborators, which is something I am working on too at the moment.

This particular episode is interesting as artists often work alone, but need collaborators in various areas of the work - developing ideas, material investigations, selling our work, or ambassadors, etc. It can feel daunting, so to get specific ideas is very helpful!

The mix between general and specific advice regarding issues to do with the visiting artist’s concerns makes for a conversation rich with value and practical steps to take.

On the downside - I know, it is the first episode - but the sound is a bit scratchy, and the voices seem muffled and at times a bit shrill. Last, I would prefer that each episode was kept at 15-20 minutes.

Thanks for great conversations!
