"What does 'Jaded' mean?"

The concept of being jaded is when you are fatigued from something, usually because you have done it too much. This can be anything as casual as working on Mondays to topics such as social justice. In this podcast we discuss the good and bad in a safe space whilst trying to 'unjade' the jaded feeling from it therefore, turning the negative experiences into positive and practical perspectives.

Hosted by Steph & Jules 🎙️✨

Episode 5: Fat & Asian: Outcasted, The Societal Issues & Embracing Our Curves

Episode 5: Fat & Asian: Outcasted, The Societal Issues & Embracing Our Curves

TW: notions of body image issues and negative body image experiences have been mentioned in this episode. Discretion is advised. Support links are available at the bottom! 💚

What does 'Fat' have anything to do with being 'Asian'? Being a curvy person is already difficult enough against expectations of society and the warped world of media, but then being a curvy Asian with the Eastern influence and mindset that comes with it, is conflicting. The idea of feeling 'fat' is a subjective concept, therefore important to note that whilst you can perceive someone as skinny/slim/well built and more, they may perceive themselves as fat. In this episode, Jules & Steph share their most distinctive memories and struggles from the past and present as proud curvy Asian women! We talk about fat-shaming, how we dealt with hurtful words and actions based on our size, and best of all, how to own it! 💃💃

TA-DA! Did you guess right? Our very first Jaded, Unjaded guest is none other than the multi-talented author and illustrator Sue Pickford Cheung! ✨ Sue's book 'Chinglish' was recently announced as the winner for the 'Best Young Adult Book' category at The Diverse Books Awards 2020! 🎉🎉🎉⠀

In the sixth episode, Sue shares incredible words of wisdom and life experiences including growing up in a Chinese takeaway, rediscovering her cultural roots by connecting with others through her book, and closing the gap between generations of British Asians by sharing the many commonalities we all hold, regardless of background and experience. Bonus: She also teaches Steph how to pronounce 'diaspora' properly through a unique technique! 😅⠀

Editing note: there were a few technical issues towards the end of the recording which meant we had to use backup files which weren't as great in quality, apologies! ♥

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 👻🧛‍♂️🎃

What's your favourite scary movie? 🎞⠀⠀

In this episode, Steph and Jules discuss how they plan to celebrate Halloween this year, share their favourite Western folktales (including Bloody Mary and Grimm Tales), whether they believe in certain superstitions and the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. We've also put a little twist in by including various Asian folklore stories and how they are able to connect in some ways. Finally, can our listeners help us figure out whether the glitch that occurred in our episode was technical or something else too? 😨😨😨  ⠀⠀

Welcome to our spookiest segment yet! We dare you to listen...💀

(PS. This episode is a lot funnier than scary, ironically) 🤡
