Lizzie Borden Weird Things and Wine

    • Hobbies

Lizzie Borden took an ax
and gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
she gave her father forty-one.
Now, this nursery rhyme is not entirely accurate. For example, it was not 40 whacks, or 41, but rather 18 and 11 respectively. And while many today believe that Lizzie was guilty, she was actually proven innocent in a court of law. Was the law flawed, biased, and prone to underestimating women? Yes, of course. It was the 1800s, after all. But while there is a lot of evidence pointing to Lizzie, there is almost as much pointing to other suspects. Like the estranged uncle who just so happened to be visiting at the same time as the murders. Or the mysterious maid, so poorly treated and with nothing left to lose. Or perhaps the shadowy figure that was seen lurking around the house? Maybe it wasn’t Lizzie at all, and she was left all alone, ostracized from society, living out the rest of her days with only her inheritance to keep her company. Or maybe she did kill her parents, what do I know? Let’s talk about Lizzie Borden.
