Make it Stack #24 - how to protect cash savings from inflation?

Make it Stack #24 - how to protect cash savings from inflation?

In this episode, I talk about how you can protect your cash savings from inflation.

    Key summary:

Inflation in the developed world has increased substantially due to a variety of factors including the war in Ukraine, supply chain issues, the expansion of the money supply and the global economy emerging from COVID-19.
Inflation is an insidious force which reduce the value of cash over time if you aren't careful. The value of money has fallen by c15% since the beginning of 2020.
Call to action: protect your cash from inflation by depositing it in an account with the highest possible risk free interest rate. Competitive interest rates for savings accounts are currently >4.8% p.a.

When depositing money in a savings account, please also consider:

Is your money safe? i.e. FSCS protected.
Is admin/monitoring simple? Active Savings is a good tool which I use.
Deposit limits? Make sure you are eligible to receive the headline rate.
Your liquidity profile? Use easy access accounts for your “rainy day” fund. Consider fixed term accounts if you want to try and lock in a “better rate for longer”.

Make it Stack #23 My investment blunder with Beyond Meat!

Make it Stack #23 My investment blunder with Beyond Meat!

In this episode, I talk about my investment blunder - which was buying Beyond Meat shares.

    Key summary:

In August 2020, I purchased £1000 worth of Beyond Meat Inc - a then trendy company in the plant-based meat industry which looked to be capitalising on the demographic shift in the Western World to a more environmental/ethical diet.
Since investing, poor company management, industry headwinds and rising interest rates have caused the stock price to fall from $131/share (my entry point) to c.$8/share. I'm sitting on a paper loss of 93%.
Whilst this has been a bitter pill to swallow, I have taken three stock picking lessons from this:

    Beware of confirmation bias
    Have a clear exit strategy
Calculate a target price with discounted cashflow analysis and don’t overpay

Whilst buying Beyond Meat was a large error, I’m glad that it’s happened early on in my career. This reduces the change of making similar errors in future with more meaningful sums of money.

Make it Stack #20 - Should you pay off your Student Loan early if you can afford it?

Make it Stack #20 - Should you pay off your Student Loan early if you can afford it?

Welcome to "Make it Stack" with Will Waterhouse, the podcast designed to demystify the world of saving and investing for young people.

In this episode, I discuss whether you should pay off your (UK) Student Loan early. Is it worth doing if you have a lump sum?

    Topics Discussed/Key Summary:

For a graduate in their mid-twenties with £50k of student debt…

Paying off the student loan early makes most sense if you have a medium/high salary of >£45k AND forecast salary growth to be above inflation over the long term.
Paying off the student loan early makes least sense if you are on a low income with a poor wage growth outlook (below inflation).

Deciding to pay off your student loan early is a complex decision and it hinges on long term factors which can be difficult to predict. A great deal of care should be taken before deciding to “pull the trigger” and pay it off with a lump sum.

Consider the opportunity cost of any spending/investment decision. Choosing to pay off the loan early forgoes the opportunity to invest for the long run (in stocks or real estate). Depending on your individual circumstances, this may not maximise your wealth.
