Is SoundCloud’s Recent Efforts Too Little, Too Late?

Is SoundCloud’s Recent Efforts Too Little, Too Late?

SoundCloud has just announced its new partnership with Dubset for faster remix clearances, a new partnership with DJ software, and another new partnership with Instagram to allow people to upload their songs directly to Instagram stories.

Just recently I asked my friends and followers on Facebook whether SoundCloud’s recent efforts were too little… too late. The majority of the responses claim that SoundCloud is not making a comeback and that it’s a last-ditch effort.

In this episode of The Music Marketer, I talk about SoundCloud’s demise and my thoughts on SoundCloud for 2019.

Spotify Partners With DistroKid and What That Means For Independent Artists

Spotify Partners With DistroKid and What That Means For Independent Artists

In September of 2018, Spotify announced its unique direct distribution service. Now Spotify has announced its ‘minority investment’ in DistroKid which obviously has other distributors freaking out. In this episode, I talk about what this partnership could mean for independent musicians, record labels, and music distributors.

    Read Spotify’s announcement today:

Today, we’re happy to announce plans to enhance Spotify for Artists by enabling artists who upload to Spotify, via our recently announced beta feature, to seamlessly distribute their music to other platforms through DistroKid.

For the past five years, DistroKid has served as a go-to service for hundreds of thousands independent artists, helping them deliver their tracks to digital music services around the world, and reaching fans however they choose to consume music. The service has been a trusted and reliable partner to Spotify, which is why they’re a natural choice to enhance the experience for artists using our beta upload feature. As part of this partnership, Spotify has made a passive minority investment in DistroKid.

We’re excited to roll out this new technical integration in the near future, and hope to share more information soon.

Spotify Direct Distribution and What It Means For You

Spotify Direct Distribution and What It Means For You

In this episode of The Music Marketer, Stevo Jacobs returns after a small hiatus to talk about the news of Spotify Direct Distribution and what this means for you. On September 20, Spotify announced that they will begin allowing a select group of independent artists the ability to upload their music directly to the platform without the need of a music distributor.

For those artists that own their own copyrights and do not have label or distribution agreements in place, artists can now log into their Spotify For Artists account, upload their music, fill in the metadata, and preview how the song will appear on Spotify. From the Spotify For Artists page, artists will be able to track payments, and when the money will be deposited into their bank accounts.

With the newly announced tool, Spotify is allowing indie artists to bypass traditional digital distributors, such as DistroKid, CD Baby, TuneCore, Stem, or Record Union.

As Spotify allows for uploads, many question whether or not this will direct distribution result in the Youtubification of Spotify? Listen to this episode of Spotify Direct Distribution below.
