Episode 4: Emotional Memory vs. Visual Memory

Episode 4: Emotional Memory vs. Visual Memory

Based on an anonymous appointment, in this episode we'll dig into the effects of "emotional memories" that have no visual memory to give us context (these are typically developed between ages 1-3, or repressed later in life because of trauma).

If you have any lingering questions on this topic, personal/specific situational questions, or comments, feel free to leave them in the comments here, direct message us through Instagram @pinkchairthairapy, or via email at pinkchairthairapy@gmail.com.

Remember, we're here to encourage and open conversation in the mindset that whatever it is - IT'S OKAY. "No one enters adulthood without baggage." So many negative, destructive, and sometimes debilitating things fester when things like this stay hidden - shame, self-hatred, resentment, addiction, the list could go on; but if we're talking about it, we're bringing it into the light and it can't fester in the darkness anymore. IT'S OKAY! You are not alone. Let's talk about it!

This episode is being published during a time of quarantine and isolation due to COVID-19. Many therapists are now offering insurance-covered virtual sessions, but there are also services that will help you connect specifically with an online-therapist, which is an amazing option during this time: https://www.betterhelp.com/start/

If you're new to therapy - please know that sometimes it can take a while to find a good fit in a therapist. Therapist shopping can be rough, but it's worth the effort. If your first meeting isn't ideal, or makes you uncomfortable, don't be discouraged. Make an appointment with someone else, and keep going until you find the right fit. It's so worth it. You can also talk to spiritual leaders & trusted friends for local therapist recommendations.

Episode 3: Relationship Dynamics in Recovery [Series 1]

Episode 3: Relationship Dynamics in Recovery [Series 1]

Wrapping up our series on addiction that was originally started by Lani W's experience of walking through recovery with her husband; in this episode we connect the dots from A and B (Episode 1: Addict and Episode 2: Co-dependent) and discuss what the relationship dynamics look like in recovery. Keeping in mind that now we’re dealing with two addictions; one addiction to a substance or behavior to self-medicate, and another addiction to “fixing” a person or “over-functioning” in a relationship; we now can look at the relationship and road ahead knowing that both parties will be walking through a recovery journey of their own. It won’t be only the “addict” walking a recovery journey with their partner supporting them, but more so it will be two separate addicts walking their own recovery journeys, simultaneously trying to support the other’s as well. Fun stuff. We discuss emotional development stages; how addiction stunts emotional growth, and how that presents itself in recovery. We'll talk about setting reasonable expectations for your recovery (on both sides), setting boundaries, and how to handle relapse.

This is the third episode of a three-part series on addiction, co-dependence, and relationship dynamics in recovery.  If you have any lingering questions on this topic, personal/specific situational questions, or comments, feel free to leave them in the comments here, direct message me through Instagram @pinkchairthairapy, or via email at pinkchairthairapy@gmail.com.

    Episode 2: Co-dependence [Series 1]

    Episode 2: Co-dependence [Series 1]

Picking up where we left off in our last episode on addiction; in this episode we tackle the experience of the people around the addict and the relationship cycles that perpetuate and enable addiction. Co-dependence. Where does it come from? Why do we stay in those cycles?  Is codependency actually an addiction? How do we get out? We'll talk about healthy boundaries, "relapsing", and being prepared for what that means for our relationships... Again, we use the example of alcoholism a lot in this episode, but keep in mind that all the concepts we discuss here are applicable to any and all addictions; substance or behavioral.  This is the second episode of a three-part series on addiction, co-dependence, and relationship dynamics in recovery.
