    The Facebook/Cambridge Analytica Scandal

    The Facebook/Cambridge Analytica Scandal

In this interview, we ask Brown University's Executive Master in Cybersecurity faculty member, Deborah Hurley, how the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal should be viewed from the perspective of laws in the US and beyond. Based on the current facts, Hurley tells us, Facebook probably wouldn’t be liable for violating personal data and privacy protections of the American Facebook users. But, in a world where users and their data are global, US laws aren’t the only ones Facebook needs to worry about. Listen to this podcast to learn more about the potential legal fallout for Facebook from the Cambridge Analytica scandal under different nations’ laws as they exist today and post May 25, 2018 when the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation goes into effect. Hurley is an adjunct professor of the practice of computer science at Brown University, Fellow at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University, and seminal player in the development of industry standards for information technology for the past 30 years.

If you’d like to hear more, listen to our other episode with Hurley where she talks about the Seven Stages of GDPR.
