In our season 2 finale, we go way back with my husband Brett Butler. We take a walk down memory lane, and share how we met and became friends; how an 8 year friendship turned into "love", and what took so long for us to FINALLY get together. (hint; it was me). We also discuss how other romantic relationships impacted our personalities along the way, and how being friends first affected the dynamics of the relationship. This is a funny yet, sometimes heartbreaking, and insightful story of not only our love story, but a journey self-worth and discovery.

In this conversation I catch up with my former high school classmate, artist and social activist Danielle Ellis. We discuss her educational journey and the validity of higher education; how dealing with divorce and her own sexual identity brought her back to creating art; and how she is using her initiative, “Mermaids Bring Water”, to provide clean water to communities, as well as how her activism serves her art and community.
ABOUT DANIELLE:
Danielle Ellis is an Oak Cliff native always ready to share her love of the arts with everyone at a moment’s notice be it painting live or holding workshops through her creative incubator Brassfly Studio. Her art education came from her parents, summer workshops at the South Dallas Cultural Center, attending Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts and later The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is also the creator of Mermaids Bring Water, an initiative that provides clean water to communities in need.

“In my work I delve into our spiritual history as a form of survival, resistance and celebration. So often the narrative has been that African Americans are so far removed and void of culture. We have retained in many ways our roots and that includes spiritualities from our Ancestral home (Africa). We are of many African cultures forced together on new lands. We’ve held onto the scraps of what we were and patched a quilt into who we are. As a spiritual practitioner with a deep love for our people, I express that in all mediums, which includes creating public/private altars and community service. My life’s work is of uplift, veneration and celebration.”

How does someone who started sewing for fun end up creating a business and an active sewing/crafting/quilting community by spreading joy & positivity? In my conversation with Mathew Boudreaux, we discuss what jump started his passion for sewing and crafting; how a background in business and communications prepared him for creating his business, Mister Domestic; and how a horrible phishing experience brought him to the realization of prioritizing his own authenticity to close the gap between Mathew & Mister Domestic.

Mathew Boudreaux of Mister Domestic learned to sew as a kid, but never really got into it until he had his daughter Helena, who is now seven and a half. He thought it would be a great way to connect with her if he could make her cool clothes. With a new motivation to up his attention-to-detail, the quality and coolness far exceeded even his own expectations. Once he started posting his projects on social media, the quilting world quickly took notice of his fearless use of color and print, incomprehensibly fast output, carefree enthusiasm and humor, and ability to seek out, acquire and share new skills. Making projects from fabric weaving to English Paper Piecing to apparel to the 3-dimensional, you can find his fabric party on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. In my conversation with Jamie, we discuss not only her egg freezing decision , but what happened when she decided to throw dating into the mix; her endometriosis diagnosis and its effect on her fertility, as well as the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages. This story has a happy ending, but is a wakeup call to normalize the conversation amongst women surrounding miscarriages and infertility.

What does it feel like to move through the world in pursuit of happiness while carrying the depths of trauma? What is it like to deal with the daily battle of multiple mental illnesses?
In my conversation with Lindsay Coryne, she courageously tackles the stigma and challenges of living with Bipolar II, PTSD, and ADHD; and shares her very personal journey; one that has a familial connection to trauma and mental illness. Her deep capacity for empathy and compassion in this area is such an inspiration and reminds us, especially in this Covid-19 era, of why empathy, human connection and support is so incredibly important.
