There are as many of the great events I can squeeze in, of course, but I also try to keep an eye on how people lived, their language, what was important to them, the forces that shaped their lives and destinies, that sort of thing. 8.1 - 369 The English Revolution
Series 8 covers the English Revolution - and the British Revolutions, 1638-1660 - or at least that's the plan! After a brief overview o fSeries 8, we go north and against sage advice, Charles was determined to bring Scottish and English churches into harmony, by introducing a Scottish Book of Common prayer, and Canons. When the new service was to be used on 23rd July 1638, opponents were prepared. Daur ye say Mass in my lug? asked Jenny Geddes.
Series 8, it is planned, will cover the English Revolutions - within the context of the Three Kingdoms, of course. At the time of writing (episode 394) we have

370 Reduce to Obedience
'I expect not anything can reduce that people to obedience but force only' Charles wrote to Hamilton in 1638, and the actions of the General Assembly of the Kirk had made probably made it inevitable. And sure the combined might of England, Ireland and Royalist Scots could do the job. Wentworth certainly thought so.

371 Parliament Recalled
As an exhausted king arrived back in Whitehall, his view had not changed one whit - the Scots must be taught a lesson and returned to obedience. More ,money raising ventures followed, but it was quickly clear that only one could solve the problem - parliament

372 Go On Vigorously
Charles and his Privy Council stretched life and limb to equip and pay for a new army to pull the king out of this fire. The Junto and Scots did everything they could to keep him in it. The result came in at Newburn.

373 Dreaming of a Golden Age
The Parliament that convened in November 1641 would define Charles' reign. He would have to offer some concessions. but who would define their extent? The sympathetic royalist MPs, the moderate Reformers - or the Radical members of the Junto? And Charles still had Strafford at his side, breathing fire.

374 Paradise Lost
Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford believed that an accommodation could be reached with Charles - a amoderate agreement that would preserve the king's honour but provide a lasting reform. And early in 1641, an agreement was within grasp.

OMG this is good
Not being english, this podcast has turned into an unexpected treat. Speed marching through the podcast the last months whilst physically doing the same along the local lungomare, I have not only been entertained, obviously learned a lot of interesting things about English history but occasionally become filled with awe. The summaries of European history are really a treat, the latest - especially - was truly helpful in so many ways, putting not only David’s work into context, but also many other podcasters’/lecturers’ work into context. Thanks and also for the easygoing style with which you takes me/us through time.
Far beyond the ordinary
I never liked podcasts: I’m a reader not a listener. Or so I thought…
This is a absolut jewel of a podcast: informative, witty, erudite. You get political, social, and economic history, embedded in the wider context of European history, with all the fights and disagreements between historians spelled out, and with David Crowther always taking his own stance. Crowther presents a web of history, not merely a thread. Over the summer, I have heard at least two episodes a day. As I’m approaching the latest episode, I’m already looking forward to the additional extra material that Crowther offers on his parallell podcast for members of his site The History of England.
Crowther also has the rare talent of reading his scripts in such a way as to not to sound as if he were reading. Trust me, I usually hear when people read, and I dislike it so intensely that hearing people read out their scripts makes me dislike their podcast (most podcasts never make it far with me). Here, I never get irritated, I often smile, and I sometimes laugh out loud.
This is in the finest tradition of English non-fiction writing. I cannot imagine how any podcast could get better than this.
Simply the best
He could probably read the phone-book, and I would love it. And the podcast is amazing in itself!
