This is a rebroadcast of Episode 625, which was published in September 2019.

    Synopsis

Elisabeth Misner, co-founder of the BNI Foundation (and Dr. Misner’s wife of 30 years) joins the podcast this week to talk about cause networking.

Cause marketing is a strategy that companies use to market themselves and create their brand awareness by their own social activism. Cause networking is identifying needs in your community and tapping into your network to help meet those needs.

BNI’s Business Voices program provides an umbrella for BNI members to engage in cause networking and create a heightened awareness of BNI in the local community.

Working together on projects for Business Voices also brings members closer together and increases member retention for BNI chapters.

If you’d like to get your chapter involved in Business Voices, go to bnifoundation.org/programs/business-voices/ and follow the instructions to complete the activation process.

Priscilla:Hello everybody and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, CA. I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan, how are you doing today?

Ivan:I am fantastic, Priscilla. And I’m really pleased to say that my beautiful bride of 30 years is my guest today, Elisabeth Misner. Elisabeth is the Co-Founder of the BNI Foundation and she travels with me all over the world speaking to audiences in BNI and other audiences about Cause Networking and the BNI Foundation’s Business Voices program. A lot of people don’t know this about Elisabeth, but first of all, she was a BNI member and joined BNI in 1986. It was the best referral I ever got. We’ve been married, as I mentioned, for 30 years but in the early days of BNI she was really active in the organization in terms of helping to create our manuals and at one point she ran the largest BNI region for the organization. She was our first Director of Marketing. So she knows the history of this organization well and better than anyone else other than possibly me. It’s really great to have her on. We started the BNI Foundation together 21 years ago.

Elisabeth, welcome to the BNI Podcast!

Elisabeth:Yes, thank you so much, Ivan. Hi, Priscilla!

    Priscilla:Hi, Beth! How are you?

    Elisabeth:I’m excellent. Thank you.

Ivan:So, Elisabeth, most people know Cause Marketing is, but talk about Cause Marketing and Cause Networking. What’s the difference?

Elisabeth:Cause Marketing is a strategy that companies use to market themselves and create their brand awareness by their own social activism by adopting a particular cause and becoming known in the community, whatever their community is- whether it’s locally or internationally or online by focusing on serving in that area. It’s very well known and most companies have some type of Cause Marketing that they are involved with and they let you know about it. For example,

Episode 683: One Tool for Hundreds of Referrals

Episode 683: One Tool for Hundreds of Referrals

    Synopsis

Tim Roberts, BNI Executive Director for Central Florida, Florida Northeast, and New Hampshire joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to explain why your appointment book is the best referral-generating tool you have as a BNI member.

Here’s how you can use your appointment book (or app) to capture opportunity that already exists.

    * Schedule frequent One-to-Ones with other members of your BNI chapter.* At each One-to-One, open your appointment book/calendar app and describe the next 10 meetings you’re having in as much detail as possible.* For each of these appointments, ask the other BNI member, “In that exact scenario, what am I looking for? What am I listening for that would tell me that these people might be a good referral for you? And if I see it, what do I say or do?”* Write down the answers for each BNI member you meet with before that appointment. Review the list just before the appointment.* While at the appointment, watch and listen for the cues on your list. When one comes up, use the suggested language to make a referral.

Tim aimed at having five One-to-Ones each week. As a salesperson, he had many meetings each week. Following this method resulted in 2-3 referrals to members of his chapter every week. Better yet, they started to use the same method, increasing their referrals to him.

And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you today?

Ivan:I am doing fantastic, Priscilla, and I have a good friend who is on our podcast with us, Tim Roberts. Tim is the Executive Director for BNI New Hampshire, Florida Central, and Florida Northeast, and he oversees over 105 chapters and over 2400 members. Tim has been in BNI for over 19 years and has been in every role from member to leadership team member, Ambassador, Director Consultant Managing Director, Executive Director, and he has been the National Director for BNI U.S. Tim has served on the Founder Circle, the Executive Council, and was the founding President of the USA Franchise Advisory Council. Tim, it is great to have you on BNI podcast. Thanks for being here today.

Tim:Thank you for having me. My pleasure.

Ivan:It’s really my pleasure to have you here. And you’ve got a topic that I absolutely love, the One Tool for Hundreds of Referrals. So, talk to everyone about this concept you’ve got.

Tim:Yeah, it’s an amazing tool that goes, you know, it predates any technology. But now it’s just even more convenient to have. And it’s actually our appointment book. I talk to a lot of people about doing One-to-Ones and why we want to do them consistently. And I talk about when I was a member, one of the things I learned was that you needed to do a lot. And I ended up actually doing one a day. So I tried to shoot for five a week. And you know, a lot of people would look at me crazy – and why would you do that?

    Episode 682: Givers Gain Communities

    Episode 682: Givers Gain Communities

    Synopsis

Julian Lewis, founding partner of Integrus Global and one of the co-authors of Infinite Giving, joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to talk about expanding Givers Gain beyond BNI.

Any community you belong to can become a Givers Gain Community by embracing the 7 principles of Givers Gain outlined in Infinite Giving. (Listen to Episode 676 if you’re not familiar with the 7 principles.)

Operating on the principles of Givers Gain can make a big difference to a community, whether it’s a family, a sports team, a religious group, or a political group. BNI chapters are positive places to be. By modeling the 7 principles, we can make the world a more positive place.

People who aren’t familiar with all 7 principles can wear themselves out giving too much. It’s very important to understand that it’s okay to gain and to learn to give from your saucer, not from your cup.

Ivan:I am doing great. And I have a good friend who is on the podcast with me, Julian Lewis. Julian co-wrote the book Infinite Giving. And we’re going to be talking about that, and Givers Gain Communities, in this podcast. And the reason we use the term Givers Gain Communities is that we wanted the book to be accessible to everyone. And we’re going to be talking about material from the book, Infinite Giving.

Julian was an amazing co-author, along with Greg Davies. And actually they brought me into the book concept that they had, and I appreciate them doing that.

Julian is passionate about personal and business success. He calls himself a portfolio entrepreneur with business interests as diverse as IT support and filmmaking. He’s a founding partner of the business coaching company, Integrus Global, and an Executive Director of BNI in the UK. In 1997, he started his first business and he’s gone on to start and grow businesses ever since. He continues to coach, mentor, and consult to businesses globally. Julian, welcome to BNI Podcast.

Julian:Thank you very much. It’s great to be here.

Ivan:Well, it’s good to have you here and I really did thoroughly enjoy working on the book with you guys. It was a blast. I particularly enjoyed the video we did of flipping the coin as whether it should be in Queen’s English or American English.

Julian:I’ve gotten into a lot of trouble in the UK for calling tails.

    Ivan:Yes, I heard that.

    Mindset Is Everything

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EPISODE OF THE OFFICIAL BNI PODCAST WAS PRE-RECORDED IN MID-OCTOBER.

    Synopsis

Lee Roebeck joins Dr. Misner this week to share a story that demonstrates how having the right mindset can help you through any situation, no matter how harrowing.

Lee is a mindset coach based in South Africa. In January of 2019, he was the victim of a carjacking and kidnapping. He spent three hours locked in the trunk of a Volkswagen Golf before he was released near a hospital in Soweto.

During those three hours, Lee focused on what he had learned from Bob Proctor’s Thinking Into Results program, Viktor Frankl’s experience in Auschwitz, and the teachings of Michael Bernard Beckwith. He started by following Beckwith’s three-step approach to anything negative.

    * Accept it. It is what it is.* Harvest the good.* Forgive the rest.

That approach helped him to remember other things he’d learned and to move from his initial panic toward calmness, equanimity, and self-control.

Ultimately, that experience brought him opportunities he never expected–including this podcast experience to share his belief that regardless of the challenge, adversity, or setback we’re facing, there’s an inherent opportunity in it.

And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan. How are you and where are you?

Ivan:Hi, Priscilla. I’m sort of all over the world this week because this is BNI’s Convention, our international convention and we literally have speakers from all over the world. We’re coming in on our online convention. It’s the first time, we’ve been doing conventions for 30 years now. But this is the first time that we’ve done it online. So this is our convention week.

    Priscilla:That sounds fascinating.

Ivan:Oh, we have some amazing speakers. Seth Godin. John Maxwell is a speaker. We’ve got Lisa Nichols, Ken Honda from Japan, and some guy named Misner, who’s going to be talking about Infinite Giving.

    Priscilla:Great.

Ivan:Well, I’ve got a guest today. His name is Lee Roebeck. And Lee is a mindset coach and a global consultant for the LEGENDARY, not just legendary, but LEGENDARY Bob Proctor. Lee lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, and has been a BNI member for three years. He was recently in the BNI Business Booster series. And you should check out his presentation at BNI University. The title is Think Big.

Lee, it’s great to have you on the BNI Podcast. And I’ve been to Jo’burg several times and really enjoyed myself in the visit. Welcome. Welcome to the podcast.

A Beacon of Hope in a Sea of Fear

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EPISODE OF THE OFFICIAL BNI PODCAST WAS PRE-RECORDED.

    Synopsis

In 1985, Dr. Misner started 20 BNI chapters with only one piece of paper and his passion to help people grow their businesses. Today, BNI has all the marketing collateral any director could hope for, but the key ingredient is still passion.

Priscilla:Hello everybody, and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice, and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello, Ivan, how are you? And where are you?

Ivan:Oh, I have been traveling. It’s been online, but I have been traveling. Over the last week or so I’ve been to Singapore, the United Kingdom’s conference UK/Ireland, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Italy. I have really been talking to BNI members all over the world in the last week or so.

    Priscilla:That sounds like fun, actually.

Ivan:It has been great. And I think today’s message is one of the more important ones that I’ve ever done on BNI podcast.

These are really difficult times and some people want to give up. Don’t. It’s actually time to double down on your efforts, not abandon your network. BNI is here to help you get through these challenging times.

In fact, I believe we are in a position to actually help even MORE people this year than we’ve ever helped before. Others may struggle during this time, but you’ll be in a position to continue to do referral business every week because of BNI. If there’s something you need, you’ll have access to your referral partners to help you with that need.

Today we have the most comprehensive set of collateral material and technology that I ever thought possible at our fingertips. We have every resource that we need to serve more members. In 1985, I opened 20 BNI groups in just one year. Now, that’s a good number, but it’s been matched by some Executive Directors.

Here’s the really interesting point about that statistic. I did it with only one sheet of paper. That’s it. All I had was one sheet. We had no collateral marketing materials, no visitor information sheets, no brochures, no invitation cards, and forget about the internet, a website, email, or social media. None of that even existed yet. I was able to open 20 chapters and all I had was that one sheet of paper. It was a typewritten sheet with the meeting agenda typed up by me on an IBM Selec...

How Young Do You Have to Be to Network?

How Young Do You Have to Be to Network?

    Synopsis

Lorena Medina joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to share a story about a member named Rogelio who was introduced to BNI because his 10-year-old son started networking on his behalf.

The boy gave one of his father’s business cards to the headmistress of the school, whose husband just happened to be president of the local BNI chapter. He invited Rogelio to join, and from then on, Rogelio had no problem getting customers.

    Networking Is a Team Sport

    * Enlist your friends and family in your networking efforts. Even if they aren’t natural-born networkers like Rogelio’s son, they will know people you can reach out to.* No one is too young to help out. Don’t wait until your kids grow up to get them involved. * Collaborate with your employees. One BNI member Lorena knows goes back to his staff after every BNI meeting to brainstorm about people they can refer to other members of the chapter. * Take your employees to BNI meetings–but make them earn the right to represent your business in BNI.* Share your BNI success story with business owners you meet outside of BNI. If you’re a franchisee, tell the franchisor to encourage other franchisees to join their local chapters.

Priscilla:  Hello, everybody, and welcome back to The Official BNI Podcast. I’m Priscilla Rice and I’m coming to you from Live Oak Recording Studio in Berkeley, California. And I’m joined on the phone today by the Founder and the Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, Dr. Ivan Misner. Hello Ivan, how are you and where are you?

Ivan:So, in addition to my many, many recorded visits all around the world this week, I am in North Carolina for a local BNI event. I’m traveling virtually around the world these days.

    Priscilla:Oh, great.

Ivan:So today’s guest is someone who’s back for her second visit to BNI Podcast. Her name is Lorena Medina. Lorena is the National Director for BNI Mexico. She’s located in Leon and has been in business since 2006. Her interests include stories in any color, shape, and form–I love that. And her burning desire is to positively impact those around her with every thought, word, and action. Lorena, you’re absolutely doing that. Something no one knows about her blew me away when I saw it. It’s so funny. She loves unicorns and secretly wishes they were real. Who would have thought that’s the case? Lorena, welcome back to BNI Podcast.

Lorena:Thank you, Ivan. It’s great to be here.

Ivan:It’s good to have you, and you have a story that you wouldn’t tell me about. You said I had to hear it personally and experience it live. So I’m a little nervous, but let’s hear it.

Lorena:Yeah, so I think you’re gonna love it. When I first heard it, it’s my all-time favorite BNI story.

Ivan:By the way, I don’t say yes to people unless I know the stories normally, but you’re so good at what you do, I trust you. I’m going with it.

Lorena:Well, thank you. I hope I deserve it. Okay, here it goes. The reason why I wanted to be here today with you is that I wanted to tell you the story of one of our networkers here in Mexico. He has been a member for five years in a Monterey chapter. That’s actually pretty close to Texas to where you are.
