Zen parenting from Sweden
Hey guys!
While downloading meditation podcasts from iTunes, the little bar with "people who liked this also liked..." recommended Zen Parenting Radio. The bar was right- I DO like it!
I am a divorced mom with an 11 year old daughter. We live in Sweden- her dad, my ex, is Swedish and before we were even pregnant with her we decided we would raise our children over here. Sweden doesn't just TALK family values, they WALK the walk! One year off with pay to be shared between the parents after the birth of a child, a child allowance up to the age of 16 to help families with the costs of children (about 200 dollars per child), free health care, free dental care, subsidized QUALITY daycare and preschool for ALL kids, free "private" schools so everyone can choose to go, not just the wealthy. (My daughter loves to sing and play clarinet; she goes to a free "private" school for music. Check out some of their concerts on youtube- Fryxellska Skolan Västerås.)
But what's missing for me is the community of parents sharing together. Not to overgeneralize, but "Swedes" are more reserved than "Americans" and I haven't found a group of parents like I had when my daughter was a toddler in the US (we moved here 8 years ago). There I had a group that raised our kids side by side, watching each other, learning from each other. (I say I haven't FOUND it... I'm not saying they don't exist here. I'm not bashing Sweden. I LOVE my foster country!)
ZPR has become my "group" since I found it a couple of months ago. I listen almost every day- to new podcasts and old. I laugh out loud on the bus sometimes. I've even cried once or twice. So, thank you.
I'm looking forward to information about the web retreat in May...
