Jesus said to his disciples:"I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses thatof the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven."You have heard that it was said to your ancestors,You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brotherwill be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brotherhas anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar,go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him.Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.Amen, I say to you,you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

Jesus said to his disciples:“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anythingbut to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world.A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deedsand glorify your heavenly Father.”

    Monday, June 10, 2024 | Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.He began to teach them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute youand utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Jesus came home with his disciples.Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him,for they said, "He is out of his mind."The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said,"He is possessed by Beelzebul,"and "By the prince of demons he drives out demons."Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables,"How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himselfand is divided, he cannot stand;that is the end of him.But no one can enter a strong man's house to plunder his propertyunless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder the house.Amen, I say to you,all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will beforgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spiritwill never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin."For they had said, "He has an unclean spirit."His mother and his brothers arrived.Standing outside they sent word to him and called him.A crowd seated around him told him,"Your mother and your brothers and your sistersare outside asking for you."But he said to them in reply,"Who are my mother and my brothers?"And looking around at those seated in the circle he said,"Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of Godis my brother and sister and mother."

Each year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After they had completed its days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.Thinking that he was in the caravan, they journeyed for a dayand looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astoundedat his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him,"Son, why have you done this to us?Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety."And he said to them,"Why were you looking for me?Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"But they did not understand what he said to them.He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them;and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
