Why are ‘Angels in America’ and ‘The Normal Heart’ Still the Most Prominent Stories About AIDS?
In this podcast episode, I discuss two of the most famous works of queer art to come out of the early AIDS epidemic, the plays ‘The Normal Heart’ by Larry Kramer and ‘Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes’ by Tony Kushner. I provide context about the plays and playwrights, discuss how the themes of the plays connect and diverge, and offer my criticisms of the white-centric nature of these stories and of the fact that they still remain the most prominent stories about AIDS.
