Ep. 36: What is Gnosticism, really?

Ep. 36: What is Gnosticism, really?

This week Lurie and Rachel discuss 3 different definitions of Gnosticism that get tossed around.   These three definitions are distinct and mean different things which is why it can be challenging to know what someone means when they call something Gnostic.  We also discuss the tendency for spiritual people to still prefer their "soul" or mind over their body and how this is in direct contradiction to Christianity.  Finally, there's a tangential discussion on Mary Magdalene, because we love her.

Enjoy this episode and as always, we talk about sensitive topics so be mindful of who's nearby if you're listening without headphones.

Ep. 35: Can Virgin Martyrs be Sex-Positive?

Ep. 35: Can Virgin Martyrs be Sex-Positive?

This week Lurie and Rachel share their experiences of learning about Virgin Martyrs.  This is one of those topics that when we stumbled on it we were both surprised that we had such different gut reactions to these female saints.  In this shorter-than-usual episode thanks to Mercury being in retrograde while we were recording, we discuss our various approaches.

We also apologize for any mixing up of saints stories or misrepresentations of particular saints--neither of us were reading hagiographies immediately preceding this recording and therefore the facts are a little wishy-washy.  The point isn't the exact stories, but rather how we can derive a variety of meanings out of these stories.

Ep. 34: Connecting to Incarnation for Advent

This week Rachel and Lurie discuss a program Rachel's offering specifically for people who want to feel connected to Advent and Christmas even as they go through a faith transition or deconstruction.  We talk about various understandings of Incarnation, about how you are a part of the Incarnation, and how reclaiming deep incarnation allows for a reclamation of the body as holy.

Enjoy and if you're interested in feeling more connected to Christmas check out Incarnational Advent, a month-long meditation here:  www.sexwithspirit.com/incarnational-advent.

Ep. 33 Will the Real Sex-Positivity Please Stand Up?

Ep. 33 Will the Real Sex-Positivity Please Stand Up?

There have been a few articles that Lurie and Rachel have read lately that seem to define sex-positivity in ways that make our holy discontent rise to the surface.  In this episode we discuss a couple of articles including this one from the NYTimes: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/opinion/sex-positivity-feminism.html

We end up offering an expansive definition of sex positivity based in Eros.--something that seems to get lost in these articles.

Lurie and Rachel discuss what makes non-monogamy ethical, their own experiences with ethical non-monogamy, and how unethical monogamy and non-monogamy exist.  They both offer their individual takes on how non-monogamy can fit into a spiritual and even a Christian life.  This episode may stretch you--that's okay!  As always we're simply offering our perspective and you don't have to agree with us or have the exact same take on the topic as we do.  We're just offering our thoughts so that you have an opportunity to explore and clarify your own.
