Ep. 41: Response to "Rethinking Sex"by Christine Emba and "Vagina" by Naomi Wolf

This week Rachel and Lurie discuss a couple of books they've been reading.  Christine Emba's new book, "Rethinking Sex: A Provocation" calls us to consider what more than consent needs to be present for sex to be good.  As she comes from an Evangelical background and converted to Catholicism in college, her work is dripping with theological claims, despite the book being for a popular audience.

"Vagina" by Naomi Wolf is a classic (despite being published within the last decade) and has some brilliance as well as some points that we'd like her to expand on.

Enjoy this conversation about sex, god, consent, science, and also you get a bonus of 3 words to consider while playing Wordle (you're welcome ;).)

    Ep. 40: Dating "Spiritual" Guys

    Ep. 40: Dating "Spiritual" Guys

Lurie and Rachel share their experiences dating "spiritual" guys, and share why it's important to own your own spiritual potential and insights instead of looking for someone else to instruct you.  While some of these stories are about people claiming to be spiritual when they're not, there's also examples of partnerships where people really were spiritual and enjoying a relationship that prioritized mutual spiritual growth.

Christena Cleveland joins Lurie to discuss her new book, God is a Black Woman.  This book is part theology, part sociology, and part spiritual narative.  Christena artfully uncovers and shares her journey to studying the Black Madonna and discusses how it is that the White Male God took over Christianity.

Ep. 38 Why We Changed Our Name

Ep. 38 Why We Changed Our Name

As you may have noticed Sex Positive Christian Feminists changed our name to God, Sex, and Sangria.  Lurie and Rachel talk in this episode about how that change came about, what will be changing about the show, and what will be staying the same.  The main reason for the change is that both of us have conflicted feelings around the word Christian, and we imagine it may be a complicated word for you too.  After months of considering our options a rebranding seemed like the simplest solution to continue to give you and us the opportunity to share time with you and talk about our favorite things:  sexuality, spirituality, feminism, politics, pleasure, desire, and of course, eros!

Ep. 36: What is Gnosticism, really?

Ep. 36: What is Gnosticism, really?

This week Lurie and Rachel discuss 3 different definitions of Gnosticism that get tossed around.   These three definitions are distinct and mean different things which is why it can be challenging to know what someone means when they call something Gnostic.  We also discuss the tendency for spiritual people to still prefer their "soul" or mind over their body and how this is in direct contradiction to Christianity.  Finally, there's a tangential discussion on Mary Magdalene, because we love her.
