Welcome back to an all-new season of The Single Greatest Choice podcast! Here with me to kick off season 6 is my guest, Carla Allen, a single black woman who is currently anticipating the arrival of her first child via gestational surrogacy. After being diagnosed with Adenomyosis in 2020, Carla faced the daunting reality of infertility. But after making a pivotal medical discovery, her journey took a miraculous turn when she saw the possibility of conceiving through surrogacy, challenging her beliefs and reawakening her dreams of motherhood.

When I was first considering solo parenthood, I scoured the internet for any resources and stories I could find about other women taking the SMBC route. Back in 2018 there weren't nearly as many people talking about this choice as there are today, but I know many of you are hungry for all the stories you can get about other women out there taking the plunge into solo parenthood by choice. Today’s guest is Meredith Kate, an aspiring southern California single mama by choice and the host of The Backup Plan Podcast. If you’ve been going back and forth about whether or not to have a second child as a SMBC, you’re not alone! I frequently get asked about this topic, and it’s one that’s on my mind a lot these days. From making decisions about egg and embryo freezing to deciding on spacing between children to weighing the pros and cons of being “one and done”...there’s a lot to think about!
In this episode, I’m opening the conversation and asking SMBCs with one or more kids to share their thoughts about growing their families. What drives their desire to add more, or conversely, what factors help them decide their family is complete as it is? Today, Luisa shares her experience of what led her to choose the solo mom life, the process of getting pregnant, navigating a relationship while simultaneously pursuing solo parenthood, her postpartum experience and what life looks like now as a mama to her 9.5-month-old son while living in her home country of Colombia. She brings up so many great topics and has such a logical perspective, so I know her story is sure to feel relatable!
