The Perry and Shawna Podcast: Real life conversations reminding you that you’re Abba’s child and that you’re blessed to be a blessing and loved to share Jesus’ love.

    Did God Create Death?

    Did God Create Death?

Perry asks “If God created everything good, why has my suffering friend had to suffer all his life?” And Jeff, a Perry and Shawna listener asks similarly, “If God made everything, why is there death?”

Dr. J joins us to answer Bible questions! Dr. Jeremy Grinnell earned his PhD in Systematic Theology from Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI, and taught graduate level theology for nearly 15 years.

He answers the following Bible questions (including above) from listeners like you.

When we’re reading the Bible how can we know if the promises we’re reading are for the people they were written to, or for us? Jeremiah 29:11 for example.

Perry shares, “God put a passion in my heart for God’s word when I was 16, but I never grew in the word cause I didn’t read it till I was 18! So Jeremy talks about why reading the word is such a big deal.

Then how the scripture transforms us inside out. And Jacqueline asks, “Is the Sabbath meant only for the Jews or is for us as well?”

Next, “What does it mean in Jeremiah that God is married to the backslider?” (It’s a beautiful window in to the astonishing grace of God). And Ronda asks, “Who was the first Jew, Adam, Eve, Abraham??”

What does true Biblical repentance look like? And last Ed asks, “Were humans more wicked before the flood than we are now? And if God judged the world so severely back then and he will destroy it again with fire, what really is God’s heart toward us? I thought he’s a God of love!!”

“I Do NOT Want To Forgive My Father”

“I Do NOT Want To Forgive My Father”

Abandoned before he was born. Fatherless his entire life. Then He met God.

The first bit of fatherly advice he got from his Heavenly Father was to forgive his earthly dad. He didn’t want to but he did.

He chose to forgive him for abandoning him which was the beginning of his healing journey. Today, he’s grateful for his father’s absence because of what God has done through him because of it.

“God Told Me To Be Supernaturally Stubborn”

“God Told Me To Be Supernaturally Stubborn”

It was a Sunday morning and pastor Jason was heading out the door when his wife said, “Before you go, give the kids a kiss goodbye.” That was the last time he saw them. He filed a missing person’s report. Thirty days later Jason was served divorce papers.

He spread them out across his bedroom floor and stood on them as he worshiped God, believing that God could do the impossible.

They were divorced. Even though his wife encouraged him to move on God told Jason to remain “supernaturally stubborn.”

One day Jason said to his wife about her boyfriend, “when he breaks your heart…I will be here.” Four days later Jason and his wife, Christine, were remarried.

Jason Carver is the author of 40 Day Stand: A 40 Day Devotional Empowering You To Stand Supernaturally for Your Marriage. Reminding you that there isn’t anything our God cannot do.

Also in this episode, Shawna talks about a friend who owed her money. She knew she had really forgiven him when she didn’t remember the amount he owed anymore.

And last, it was 3 long years that Perry and Shawna listener Brian and his bride has no relationship with their son and his wife and their grandkids. There was a rift, Brian longed for it to be made right, but his son had been hurt.

    Finding Peace With Your Past

    Finding Peace With Your Past

To embrace the present you need to make peace with your past. Dr. Ming Wang learned this first hand when the challenges of bringing a blind child from darkness to light made him come face to face with his own darkness.

SIGHT, starring Greg Kinnear and Terry Chen, follows the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese American who defies all odds to become a world-renowned eye surgeon. Drawing on the grit he gained growing up in the Chinese cultural revolution of the 70’s, Dr. Wang sets out to restore the sight of a blind orphan.

Dr. Wang shares how his heart was moved from atheist to Jesus follower, how faith works with science (not against it), and the incredible advances in technology and their impact on eye surgeries today.

Also, in this episode Shawna shares how God is showing her through Proverbs and personal reflection the idolatry of self-worship.

And Perry shares, “If my life was always easy, I don’t think my desire for Jesus would be that deep.” From Perry’s life and the apostle Paul, we have a conversation about the transformational power of hardship.

“My Crisis of Faith” – Jack Haveman

“My Crisis of Faith” – Jack Haveman

As a college student, Jack began wrestling with everything he believed about Jesus, he started to doubt if it was true. When he asked his friends if they had doubts, they would say “Nope!” That’s when a pastor pointed him to the gospel of John.

Jack Haveman, station manager of 89.3 Moody Radio Grand Rapids joins the team to share stories of his journey with Jesus and what’s in the next season after he retires at the end of June.

Jack shares a time when he experienced both the discipline and the incredible love of God at the same time.

Then, it was a Share fund-raising event for 89.3 and as manager, Jack had seen the station hit the goal every year. But this particular year it wasn’t going well and he was frustrated. He realized it was his pride. That’s when he decided to tell all West Michigan about it!

Most people don’t look forward to going to jail, but Jack does! He shares how God is calling him to serve in jail ministry in the next season. Share your thanks to Jack for his ministry here!

Also, in this episode, Perry was 10 when he put his faith in Jesus. That’s when he was set right with God, and though he would go on to commit the worst sins of his life, his standing with God never wavered. How can this be?

Lastly, Shawna was not ready to say goodbye to her dad. As she met with the Lord to process her dad’s failing health He reminded her that He would never leave her and that she would be together again with her dad someday in heaven.

    Addiction Is Not a Disease

    Addiction Is Not a Disease

As Christians we’re called to forgive one another. But does that mean we don’t recognize what others did as wrong? When do we cross a line into enabling others to continue in their sin?

Travis Thompson, drawing from his own personal addiction and recovery, helps us navigate the challenges of addiction to develop sustainable recovery strategies.

Travis is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the author of To Those With Faith: Helping the Church Understand and Support Healing for Those in Addiction.

In this episode he also shares what we can learn from the life of David. There were bread crumbs of sin in David’s life that lead right up to his sin with Bathsheba.

Travis believes that the Bible is more than an instruction manual for Christian living – it’s the most applicable document to healing the soul for believers and nonbelievers alike.

Also, Shawna shares that following Jesus is a lifestyle of one eighties. The Bible calls it “repentance.”

As a kid, before Perry gave his live over to Jesus, he was asked by a young pastor, “Perry are you saved yet?” Perry’s answer then tells us so much about the default mode of the human heart: “I’m working on it!”

Lastly, though it’s painful to have to stop and look at our sin, to name it and own it – being specific with God in confessing our sin can help us to avoid the same sin in the future. In confession we are reminded of God’s faithfulness to forgive us and cleanse us.
