Doc Dive Documentary Dive: The Cliffs Notes

Scattered around Canada's Great Slave Lake -- the deepest lake in  North America -- 10 survivalists will  endure the harsh and incredibly cold landscape -- the Arctic -- and they  will do it all alone. Alone is a success survival show on the History Channel now available on a bunch of the streaming services.

History Channel describes the season as: "Completely isolated, with a small pack of  survival gear, they must live off the land by  creating their own shelters, catching their own food, and surviving the  harsh terrain. They take on a host of dangerous wildlife, including  packs of wolves, bears, and cougars. The last one standing takes home the prize."  Which if you watch the season, is a vast exaggeration on so many accounts. 

It's a very entertaining show, and if you're following new seasons, you'll notice that a lot of the allure has changed, as well as a lot of the rules. This cast talks with as little spoiler alerts as possible about Season 1 exclusively.

Dealt is a 2017 American documentary film directed by Luke Korem. The film is about the life and career of Richard Turner - who is renowned as one of the world's greatest card magicians, yet he is completely blind.

It's a delightful documentary where the filmmaker stays out of it, and lets Richard and his family tell their story. And often Richard's hands do the talking. 

In the documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength. The film features extensive vérité footage of both Richard and his family as well as archive footage of Turner's many television appearances. The film features interviews with notable magicians including Turner, Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Armando Lucero, and Jason England.

Dealt debuted at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival in competition where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Dealt went on to win four more audience awards and screened at festivals around the world including China and New Zealand. The film is distributed by IFC Films through Sundance Selects. In the US, the film can be viewed on Hulu, Amazon and iTunes. Internationally, it is available on Netflix.

Man on Wire is a 2008 British-American biographical documentary film directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center. It is based on Petit's book, To Reach the Clouds, released in paperback with the title Man on Wire. The title of the film is taken from the police report that led to the arrest (and later release) of Petit, whose performance had lasted for almost one hour. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations for the event and still photographs of the walk, alongside re-enactments (with Paul McGill as the young Petit) and present-day interviews with the participants, including Barry Greenhouse, an insurance executive who served as the inside man.[4]

Man on Wire competed in the World Cinema Documentary Competition[5] at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize: World Cinema Documentary and the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary.[6] In February 2009, the film won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Philippe Petit had a dream, a passion, a compulsion, to hang a high wire in the most unlikely of places...103 stories above the earth, across the twin giants, the World Trade Towers. Just months after COO's were signed and occupants took residency in the building, a tiny French man with a dream, a knack for showmanship, and impeccable balance, hung his wire, and made history.  It was as much history in 1974, as it is today, just as it was in 2008 when this documentary came out. 

As is the case for many powerful documentaries, just years later, the story was turned into a major motion picture which utilized 3D Imax filmmaking as a helper to tell this amazing story.  This documentary is told solely through the mouths of those that were there that faithful day, and the filmmaker stays out of it, as only a great documentarian shall do. 

I love this film. And can re-watch it every year or more.

EPISODE 6 Corresponds with Episode 6 of Netflix's Reality Docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness "The Noble Thing To Do"  This Episode centers around Joe losing the Zoo, and Jeff Lowe and his felon friends finding out that they can put Joe "away for good" if they report him to Fish and Game, which is a Federally Funded Agency.  It is clear now that the FBI was never involved in Joe's case, but only Fish and Game.
