What is death, how did it come to be and how can it be avoided?

Genesis 3:17-19
And unto Adam he said, Because you hearkened unto the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying You shall not eat of it... In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground; for out of it you were taken, for dust you are and unto dust you shall return.
Genesis 3:22-24
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God ... drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Dueteronomy 30:15-18
"See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish...
