Kinda Latvian KindaLatvian

After a very long break, Kinda Latvian is back! This episode was filmed in the Czech Republic in May, but only coming out now. We talk about the ‘’daba’’, which is Latvian for ‘’nature’’. Latvian nature is beautiful and unique, but it runs a lot deeper than just what you can see. The nature is one of the ‘’roots’’ of the nation and an important part of the culture. What does the nature look like in Latvia, what does it mean to us and what have we learned about its significance to the Latvian people. Have a listen to find out!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas and to get us into the festive spirit, we decided to make this the topic of episode 8. Christmas is a time to bring people together, but the activities people partake in often depend on where they live. Latvia claims to have had the first Christmas tree in the world, so it is no surprise that they have many traditions. We talk about some of the Christmas traditions we have enjoyed in Latvia, share our own traditions and Joe tells us how he saved the ‘Christmas spirit’ for a Latvian kid with the help of a BMW and a Santa Claus suit…

Every culture has its own mannerisms and Latvia is no exception! Who knew that a simple handshake to greet someone, could involve so many steps. You may never fully understand some of the mannerisms, but we can try to create our own theories as to why they exist. In episode 7 we share some of the biggest Latvian mannerisms, that we noticed and some of which we have even adopted in the process of becoming ‘kinda Latvian’.

Latvia is a sporty nation and has a lot to be proud of in this category. In episode 6, we share a little about our sports ‘’career’’ history, look at some successful Latvian athletes and talk about our experience in the Latvian sports culture! Sport is like a universal language which can be spoken all over the world and we have found it can be a way to integrate well into the local community.

In this episode we focus on Latvian food. Every country has their own cuisine and food culture, and Latvia is no different. We share some of our favourite Latvian dishes as well as reminisce about trying some of the more unique dishes this country has to offer.
