Episode 72: C-PTSD in Professional Environments with Lindsay Morgia

Episode 72: C-PTSD in Professional Environments with Lindsay Morgia

Join Susan as she explores pivotal moments in Lindsay Morgia's life that shaped her understanding of Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and its impact on her professional life. From initial scepticism to validation through literature and professional experience, Lindsay talks candidly about her transformative journey from acceptance and healing to advocacy. She acknowledges that the emotional neglect and trauma in childhood informed her coping mechanisms, led to burnout and affected how she showed up in her professional life. Lindsay experienced this more as an inside-out way of operating, whilst the leaders and teams she worked with thought it was just Lindsay being a great hard-working team player and employee. Lindsay offers insights into navigating workplace dynamics, what she sees as trauma-informed, and what is not. Discover Lindsay's insights on building resilience and the work she does now that fosters supportive, inclusive environments for mental health in the workplace. You can find Lindsay's work and blog at www.morgiaresearchservices.com or on LinkedIn.

Trailer: C-PTSD and its impact on workplace dynamics

Trailer: C-PTSD and its impact on workplace dynamics

In the upcoming episode of the Coffee and Contemplation with Susan Dunlop podcast, we'll be delving into the topic of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) and its impact on workplace dynamics and mental health advocacy. My guest, Lindsay Morgia, founder of Morgia Research Services, is joining me from Boston, Massachusetts. Lindsay will bring her wealth of lived experience and professional experience in non-profit consulting and data analysis to shed light on this important subject. Early in May, I spotted a Blog on Facebook titled 'Flying Under the Radar with C-PTSD'. The article written by Lindsay shared that she struggles with C-PTSD symptoms every single day due to the emotional abuse and neglect she experienced as a child. However, she managed to fly under the radar in her professional life. She has two Master's degrees, over 15 years of experience as a data analyst for non-profits, and runs her own business. How did she fly under the radar? Because her symptoms and coping mechanisms fall under the "socially acceptable" end of the spectrum. It was that, and what came next, that caught my attention and led to me inviting Lindsay onto the show. Next, she shared her list of three coping mechanisms: 1: Self-sufficiency; 2: Perfectionism; 3: An extremely high b******t tolerance. How interesting! Lindsay and I are preparing this week for our comfortable cups of coffee and contemplation to be broadcast in early June.

Episode 70: Anxiety Can Be Reduced By Acts of Kindness

Episode 70: Anxiety Can Be Reduced By Acts of Kindness

Today, we’re celebrating Episode 70. I’m recording it with my favourite person from Detroit, Teri Giannetti!

I met Teri as a fellow 3 Vital Questions certified facilitator in 2021. She has appeared on the podcast once before – Episode 58 in 2022. In that episode, Teri shared her personal journey and the challenges for the little girl she was who started school without English as a language. Because of how she was treated by the school system back in that decade, oh… a few decades ago now, Teri became a teacher and school principal, wanting to make every child feel that they can learn and that there is someone there for them.

I reconnected with Teri late in 2023, and our conversation began with ‘you know Susan, anxiety can be diluted by acts of kindness. Followed up with ‘I wrote some letters’. Who to? Teri had reached out to US leaders like Warren Buffet and Barbara Streisand, asking for people like them to open the door for her to address the anxiety that is being experienced across America, concerned that the final straw people come to is suicide if anxiety is not addressed.

It feels absolutely 100% the right week, month, and year for us to discuss Kindness with Teri.

If you'd like to connect with Teri please contact me at connect@susandunlop.com.au and I will pass on your details.

Episode 67: Dr Zarya Rubin, MD. Harvard-educated functional medicine physician specialising in burnout!

Episode 67: Dr Zarya Rubin, MD. Harvard-educated functional medicine physician specialising in burnout!

The first episode for 2024 is Dr Zarya Rubin, MD, of Portland Oregon. I believe our worlds collided for a good reason when I found Dr Zarya and asked if she'd like to join me as a guest on the show.

Zarya is a Harvard-educated functional medicine physician, keynote speaker, and burnout expert. She helps passionate, high-achieving women get to the root cause of chronic symptoms and stress so that they can heal from the inside out and truly thrive.

Also founder and CEO of Dr. Zarya, a boutique functional medicine practice in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Rubin studied neurology at McGill University and the renowned Neurological Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She received her integrative nutrition
training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, studying with Dr. Andrew Weil,  Dr. Mark Hyman, Dr. Deepak Chopra and other leading influencers in the world of holistic health, and went on to complete advanced Functional Medicine training at the School of Applied Functional Medicine.

She lives in Portland, OR with her husband, 10-yr-old daughter, and Bichon miniature poodle puppy.

When she is not speaking or seeing patients, she is singing with the Portland Symphonic Choir, on her yoga mat, or cooking up creative delights in her kitchen.

I wondered why did she choose to do the work she delivers now? Because she’s been there...

When chronic stress, anxiety and burnout caused her to leave medicine, she knew she needed to make some serious changes
if she wanted to lead a fulfilling, authentic life.  She wasn't satisfied that illness and the hamster wheel of stress was her "new normal" and that she would just have to accept it and live with it. She knew she wanted better.

She managed to get back on her feet, but then threw herself into another intense, highly stressful career with long hours.
The truth is, she was chasing success in order to avoid dealing with the much scarier pit of anxiety that she tried to push away by avoiding dealing with it.

And from the outside? She was more successful than ever.

But after she had her daughter, she entered a new phase of
exhaustion, one that was even worse than being on-call overnight at the hospital. She was irritable, couldn’t get out of bed, and constantly ill. She was eating a healthy diet (She is actually one of those crazy people who adores kale and quinoa)? So why was she so sick?

None of it made sense to Zarya until she finally realized that the mind-body connection was stronger than ever, and years of untreated stress, anxiety, and PTSD had taken a toll, not
just on her mental health, but her physical health as well - autoimmune disease, emergency surgery, adrenal fatigue. She finally got help from physicians, healers, and a coach of her own, who all helped put her back together.

And so her journey of self-discovery has led her to holistic approaches to health and wellness, healing from the inside out, balancing mind and body.  Zarya is so happy with where she
is today and would love to share what she’s learned with our audience.

    Here's the link to Zarya's website - https://drzarya.com

Zarya's episode has been broadcast across 7 or 8 streaming sites including the one you’ve just listened to! Also new for 2024, this and all other episodes are loading onto my YouTube channel so you can follow the transcript there.
