"Before birth, you were called a rebel." These are harsh words for the Hebrew people, but they are unsurprising to us. This nation had been rebelling against God since he took them out of Egypt. But God will continue to work in and through them for his name's sake. For his glory, God will still bring about everything he has promised. God would (and now has) raise a servant (Jesus the Messiah) to bring the people of Jacob back to himself. Gloriously, it was not the Jews alone who would be brought near to God through the work of the Redeemer, but the nations as a whole, the Gentiles, would also be brought to salvation.

Christ has, through his work on the cross and the empty tomb, set free those who were in prison, brought those who had lived in darkness out into the light, fed the hungry, healed the lame, opened the eyes of the blind, and led them by springs of water. He is the good shepherd. He is the perfect sacrifice. He is the perfect high priest. He is the everlasting King. He is our Lord. Those who wait upon the Lord will never be put to shame.

Isaiah spends a lot of time showing the difference between the one true living God and the idols that are the work of men's hands. Bel and Nebo need their idols to be carried on the backs of beasts. These idols of stone and wood get taken into foreign lands, the plunder of the besieging army. In contrast, the living God is the one who carries his people. From the womb to the gray hair of the aged, God carries and cares for his people.

The foolish people hire a goldsmith to fashion an image they can then bow down to, pray to, and offer worship to. They pick it up at the shop and carry it on their shoulders to their homes.

You should put it over by the fireplace. That could look nice," offers the husband.

"I don't know. I liked it by the window. The morning light seems to capture its beauty."

"Well, you need to put it somewhere that the kids won't crash into it when they run through here. That was an expensive idol, and I don't want it all dinged up as soon as we get it home."

The wife muses a little bit. "Okay, move it one more time for me."

    He rolls his eyes.

"I am the first, and I am the last; besides me, there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it."

Let those words about our God sink into your brain a bit. Take them off the screen in front of you and just hold on to them for a little while.

God is the first. "In the beginning, God..." There is none before him. He is the source of all things. All life and all creation bow before him and echo his praises.

God is the last. If he were to withdraw his breath from the earth, all mankind would turn to dust again. If he ceased to uphold all things by the word of his power, every atom would dissolve to nothing, and there amid nothing would still be God, for he can't be undone.

Besides him, there is no god. No spirit, angel, demon, or devil can exalt themselves above the creator, for they are just creatures. No army could elevate themselves to the throne of the kingdom of heaven. No man in pride and strength could overthrow the invisible God of glory.

We too often forget that Jesus came as a servant to God. Jesus, the exact imprint of God's glory, the fullness of his power, one with him in Spirit and grace, that same Jesus, submitted himself to the Father as a servant. He did this as an example to us that we, too, would submit ourselves to the Father in all things. "Have this attitude in yourself which was also in Christ Jesus... who became obedient to the point of death on a cross."

On the last night of the life of Christ, he washed the feet of the disciples, telling them to go and do likewise. People have taken that to mean we should wash one another's feet and have entirely missed the point. Jesus told them, "A servant is not greater than his master." Jesus was exampling servanthood to the Apostles and, by extension, to us. Jesus was a servant, so we would be servants to those around us. Jesus, the creator and sustainer of all life, humbled himself and took the form of a servant. By this obedience he brought about salvation for all who would believe.

Jesus, the chosen servant, has glorified the Father and shown us how we can do the same.

Isaiah 40 is one of the more recognizable texts among those who have been in church for any length of time. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength."

The majority of this chapter shows us the magnitude of the God we serve. No one taught him wisdom. No one gives him counsel. The nations and islands are like dust on a scale to him. They are of no account. There are not enough beasts on the earth to offer him an adequate offering nor enough trees to kindle the sacrificial fire. He marks off the heavens simply by stretching out his hand. Every ocean, every stream, every mighty rushing river, every pond, lake, and bubbling brook would be as a few drops in the cup of his hand.
