Why do we hiccup‪?‬ I've Always Wondered

Hiccupping/hiccoughing is bizarre, and not just because of how it is spelled. They can appear at a moment's notice, and be rather embarrassing. So, why do they happen, how do they happen, and how can we stop them? This is the question someone wondered to us so we had a go at answering it, only we faced a slight hiccup, because no-one seems to know.
