Life at work can be funny, challenging, ridiculous, and -- yes, even satisfying. Here at Safe For Work, we're all about helping you find balance and happiness in your career. After all, many of us spend more time with our co-workers and clients than with our friends and family. Hosts Liz Dolan and Rico Gagliano give advice on everything from how to avoid burnout on the job to how to fake an illness when you're calling in sick. We also talk to experts about those moments at the office that can challenge the best of us: negotiating raises, knowing when it’s time to move on...or dealing with that annoying office mate with no boundaries. From Wondery, the network behind Business Wars, Safe For Work is helpful career advice that's lively and fun, just like your work life should be. In every episode, Liz and Rico talks with callers, business leaders and noted know-it-alls who share their hard-earned wisdom from the trenches. Liz Dolan is the former head of marketing at Nike, The Oprah Winfrey Network and National Geographic and host of the podcast Satellite Sisters. Rico Gagliano is a contributor to The Wall Street Journal, former host of podcast Dinner Party Download, reporter on the public radio show Marketplace, and co-author of BRUNCH IS HELL.

    Bouncing Back From Failure

    Bouncing Back From Failure

Failure is often seen as something negative, but it’s not always a bad thing. When one door closes, another opens. Or, if you’re like television and film producer Nina Jacobson, you make your own door, so to speak. Jacobson’s credits include The Hunger Games and Crazy Rich Asians. But she was also fired as a Walt Disney Company studio exec more than a decade ago. In this episode, Jacobson will talk about what she learned from her own failures to become the success she is today.

Then, Liz and Rico give will give some advice to listener Nicole, who’s trying to juggle her new role as a “middle manager.” In other words, she’s managing others while working under her own boss. We’ll also hear from listener Dustin, who feels out of place among his more privileged colleagues.

And in this week’s Mind the Gap segment, Liz and Rico will tackle hypothetical workplace situations, like whether you should stick your hand in that communal candy bowl on your colleague’s desk.

As always, if you've got a burning workplace question and need some advice, don't hesitate to send us an email (that email, unsurprisingly, is also Safe@Wondery.com). You can also find us on Twitter, we’re @SafeFor Work. Don't forget to follow our sage hosts on Twitter, too; they're @SSLiz and @RicoGagliano. And if you want to check out Liz’s other show, Satellite Sisters, you can find it on Apple Podcasts or Art19.

    Achieving The Ever-Elusive Work-Life Balance

    Achieving The Ever-Elusive Work-Life Balance

The perpetual battle between time spent at work vs. home can be heart-wrenching. But if your kid is asking for an appointment to get a hug, Coach Larry joins us with some thoughts on how to change that. In this episode, Larry will parse the challenges men and women face to find time for family, the importance of your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” function and how to carve out a personal life (or even [gasp] a vacation!) without feeling like you’ve left your colleagues hanging.

Then, Liz and Rico help returning listener Gilbert, who’s been given a bait-and-switch after accepting a new position. And listener Gabriel calls in about whether to put BDSM event planning and training gigs on his otherwise orthodox resume.

And in today’s Bad Advice segment, we give our take on whether sending emails at night should be off-limits.

    Gossip at work...can be good?

    Gossip at work...can be good?

Okay, let's make this clear from the top: we here at Safe For Work are not staunch supporters of office gossip. From the office politics of peddling secrets, to the ease with which gossip can breed cliques and cabals, there are plenty of pitfalls when it comes to workplace gossip. But on today's episode, Amy Gallo of the Harvard Business Review makes some very compelling points as to why gossip can be...well, good! Then, Liz and Rico rail against the verbiage of the corporate world in today's iteration of Lingo Bingo. And we help some listeners, too: Robin's worried that her job will be the first on the chopping block, while the new hires at Nakita's office are making more than some long-term employees. If you've got a burning workplace question and need some advice, don't hesitate to shoot us an email! You can reach us at Safe@Wondery.com. And don't forget to follow our sage hosts on Twitter: they're @SSLiz and @RicoGagliano.

    Meeting a new coworker

    Meeting a new coworker

Liz and the rest of us here at Safe For Work have a new coworker in our midst — his name is Rico Gagliano, and he’s going to be the new co-host here. And with Rico’s arrival, we were all wondering: what’s the best way to actually get to know a new coworker? So on today’s show, Liz and Rico talk about the things that have worked for them when they’ve been the new kid on the block, as well as their tips for making a new employee on your team feel welcome (hint: bonding at work DOES NOT have to involve ice-breakers). Then we debate those eternal workplace issues — least favorite bit of workplace jargon? — in today’s iteration of Mind the Gap, which spawns a new segment entirely focused on corporate lingo (please email us and share your least favorite work-speak).
