Such Stuff as Dreams Are Made On:

The Role of Fantasy in Jungian Life

A lecture by Susan Meindl

Susan Meindl is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Montreal, Canada

Active imagination is considered one of the “four pillars” of Jungian psychology. There are, however, many naturally and intuitively entered-into mental activities which draw on the same human capacities as active imagination, but without an intentional therapeutic effect. For individuals with a strong capacity for imagination, fantasy life can be alluring, treacherous and for some, addictive. What happens when active imagination escapes the analyst’s office and wanders around “wild” in the psychological world?

Jung was aware of some of the dangers, but he also felt that active imagination was a powerful adjunct to dreams as a way of connecting to deeper parts of ourselves, individuating and creating a living relationship with our unconscious. Please join me for this lecture and seminar in which we will explore some of the fascinating, and often revealing, aspects of fantasy and imagination.
