Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes with Dr. Dale Bredesen

Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes with Dr. Dale Bredesen

Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDark
Alzheimer’s doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s the severe end of a spectrum, that comes after decades of changes have already been occurring in the brain. So why is it that we’ve grown accustomed to dreading this diagnosis, instead of doing what we can to proactively stop it in its tracks? For one, we’ve long been told that once the brain starts downsizing we can’t reverse the process. Now, we know that’s not the case. It’s possible to avoid brain degradation and actually even rebuild it.
Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy has been a pioneering detective for Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. Dr. Dale Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer's. His latest book, The End of Alzheimer’s Program, goes into greater detail on the protocol he uses with his patients and how it can be tailored to anyone’s needs, at any age. Dale held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA, and the University of California, San Diego, and directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. He is currently a professor at UCLA and the Chief Science Officer at Apollo Health.

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing with Dr. Todd LePine

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing with Dr. Todd LePine

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy
Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health.
Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

    The myth of diagnosis
Using conventional lab testing in conjunction with advanced, unconventional lab testing
    Testing for heavy metal toxicity
Testing for gut health beyond standard stool testing
Assessing immune health and inflammation markers
Using lab testing to get to the root cause of low-energy, fatigue, adrenal and mitochondrial dysfunction
Advanced testing for Lyme disease, tick infections, Epstein-Barr virus, and more

    Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome

    Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome

Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp
By now, most of us are familiar with post-COVID syndrome, also called long-haulers syndrome, in which a patient who has had COVID-19 experiences long-lasting symptoms. While medicine is still trying to fully understand the reason why a percentage of COVID-19 patients go on to also experience post-COVID syndrome, there appear to be parallels to chronic fatigue syndrome experienced from the Epstein-Barr virus. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about using a Functional Medicine approach to treat post-COVID syndrome. He also speaks with Dr. Matt Cook about several cutting-edge therapies he is using to treat his patients with post-COVID syndrome.
Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. His research focus is on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating value in Functional Medicine models of care. Currently, his teaching focus is on cancer, COVID, and uncertainty.

Dr. Hanaway was initiated in 2009 as a Mara’akame (Indigenous healer) by the Huichol people of the Sierra Madres in Mexico. He holds community fires, leads ceremonies, and offers traditional healing sessions. This part of his practice provides some much-welcome spiritual and emotional insight into addressing our imbalances as a nation.
Dr. Matthew Cook is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has completed a fellowship in Functional Medicine. His practice, BioReset™ Medical, provides treatments for conditions ranging from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness. At BioReset™ Medical, Dr. Cook treats some of the most challenging to diagnose and difficult to live with ailments that people suffer from today, including Lyme disease, chronic pain, PTSD, and mycotoxin illness. His approach is to use the most non-invasive, natural, and integrative ways possible.
Regarding the current pandemic, Dr. Cook has spent the past several months distilling the latest research, talking with experts around the world, and integrating his vast clinical experience to provide up-to-date information to the public and medical practitioners.

Who Should Eat Keto and Why? with Gary Taubes

Who Should Eat Keto and Why? with Gary Taubes

Who Should Eat Keto and Why? | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDark
Chances are, you’ve heard a lot of buzz about the ketogenic (or keto) diet. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path.
Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research.
This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDark.
Paleovalley is offering 15% off your entire first order. Just go to paleovalley.com/hyman to check out all their clean Paleo products and take advantage of this deal.
Right now, Joovv is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners an exclusive discount on Joovv’s Generation 3.0 devices. Just go to Joovv.com/farmacy and use the code FARMACY. Some exclusions do apply.

Here are more of the details from our interview:

How an investigative journalism piece on salt and blood pressure led to Gary’s ongoing inquiry into the obesity epidemic (9:11)
    Why we get fat (13:58)
Why science mistakenly began focusing on calories, instead of hormones, to understand obesity (17:58)
The origin and perpetuation of fat shaming and obesity stigma (21:45)
There is no one-size-fits-all diet (29:02)
Using a keto (or low-carb, high-fat) diet to decrease insulin levels (37:20)
How ultra-processed, starchy refined carbohydrates are driving most of our global issues (50:15)
Would humans and the planet be healthier if we all stopped eating meat and became vegan? (52:34)
Connecting what you eat with how you feel (57:57)
Research on treating and reversing type 2 diabetes using a ketogenic diet (1:04:41)
Using a ketogenic diet to treat cancer, heart disease, heart failure, dementia, epilepsy, and more (1:17:05)

Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective with Dr. George Papanicolaou

Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy Earth
For anyone who has experienced shingles, or been around someone who has, you know this can be an incredibly painful condition. Symptoms include rash, hives, and nerve pain. Shingles  are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus tends to hide, or almost hibernate, in nerve cells long after someone has recovered from chickenpox, and can re-emerge as shingles down the line. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss why supporting the immune system is so critical when it comes to preventing and treating shingles, and much more.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.
This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy Earth.
Athletic Greens is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners a full year supply of their Vitamin D3/K2 Liquid Formula free with your first purchase, plus 5 free travel packs. Just go to athleticgreens.com/hyman to take advantage of this great offer.

In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss:

    The shingles-chicken pox connection
Symptoms associated with shingles, and why they are so painful
The role of the immune system in the development of shingles
The conventional vs. functional medicine approach to treating shingles
    The shingles vaccine
Patients suffering from shingles who Dr. Papanicolaou has treated
