34: LGBTQ+ Series Part 2: Sarah Hegazi and Oppression
Welcome back to ‘On the Record … with MAH’ – the student-led podcast by the School of Media, Arts and Humanities at the University of Sussex.
In part two of this series, in this episode, we discuss the political and economic oppression inflicted on the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in Egypt. In the case of Sarah Hegazi; an Egyptian human rights activist who committed suicide whilst in exile in Canada on 14.6.2020. She claimed asylum there after being arrested, detained & tortured for raising the LGBTQ+ flag at a concert in Cairo 2017. We discuss the upcoming anniversary of the Egyptian LGBTQ+ activist and celebrate her legacy with a close friend of hers, Sara Alshief along with Isobel Elrick. We discuss triggering topics of suicide and homophobia, if anyone is triggered by the issues discussed there are helplines below.

In this series, we talk about all things LGBTQ+ and for this first part, we discuss film representation and TV recommendations. Featuring Isobel Elrick and Sara Alshief, we critique the progression of representation such as Killing Eve, Heartstopper, Euphoria, Tangerine, Skins, Glee and many more. We explain the industry's continuous biphobic and homophobic attitudes to representation mentioning the bury-the-gays trope and limited queer representation specifically in the asexual community.

Welcome back to ‘On the Record … with MAH’ – the student-led podcast by the School of Media, Arts and Humanities at the University of Sussex.
Hosted by Georgia Radley featuring Luke Thomspon and Isobel Elrick, we discuss the changes in TV regarding the infamous struggles of TV licensing and shifting difficulties in streaming regarding marketing and many more. In this critical discussion, we find a shift in TV which has found film a key part of family tradition however the popularity of streaming has displaced definitive social spaces within the household. In this episode, we discuss the fragmentation of streaming, TV abolishment and political factors behind some of these decisions.
